Involves the Entire Community in the Fight against Cancer
In communities throughout Ohio, people are gathering together to help fight cancer at a unique event called Relay For Life. Relay is the American Cancer Society’s signature event that brings together teams of families and friends from local companies, schools, clubs, and organizations to fight back against cancer. Although it sounds like a running event, Relay For Life is actually a walk and anyone is welcome to participate.
There is no fundraising requirement but we encourage all of our participants to raise $100. When you reach the $100 mark you earn your Relay For Life T-shirt representing your commitment to this event. All proceeds raised from Relay For Life are used for our lifesaving programs and services as well as cancer research. With the money raised in our region we were able to provide 2,830 patient and caregivers with free lodging at one of our four Hope Lodge facilities in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Hershey, and Philadelphia in 2012. There are currently 15 research grants totaling $7,330,000 at Case Western Reserve University and one at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Every day we are creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping you stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.
While events vary from location to location, Relay For Life events share many of the same elements that make it such an enjoyable and successful experience. We take time to celebrate our survivors, remember loved ones we have lost, and fight back against this horrible disease.
There are currently two Relay For Life events in Geauga County. The first is Relay For Life of Middlefield which will be May 4 – May 5, 2013, at Cardinal High School. This year we are celebrating Relay For Life of Middlefield’s 10th birthday and are hoping to make this our best year yet! The second event in Geauga County is Relay For Life of Chardon. This event will be held at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School, June 22 – June 23. After reaching the millionth dollar made in Chardon toward the fight against cancer last year, we are looking forward to yet another life changing event.
