It will be a Big Night for Dark Skies when Observatory Park Hosts the Meteors & Moths Overnight Event on August 11

Each August, Observatory Park becomes a hub for wishing upon shooting stars – 60 to 80 per hour – and studying night-flying insects during its Meteors & Moths Overnight Event. But this year, the same night of Saturday, August 11th, also doubles as an outdoor movie night, showing the fan-voted classic “Back to the Future.” It’s a big night for Ohio’s only International Dark Sky Park!

When you arrive, start by picking your spot with your blankets and chairs for the movie, which begins at dark. Pre-show activities beginning at 8:00 p.m. include the Geauga County Public Library’s Fun Bus and free lemonade and popcorn (while supplies last).

If you’re in for the long haul, you may also pitch a tent somewhere else on campus for the overnight show. Park telescopes will be available for viewing non-meteors if the weather is clear, and a naturalist will be on hand from sunset to sunrise as your informal guide.

The best meteor viewing in clear weather should be 1:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., but whatever the weather, you’ll enjoy interacting with moths and other nocturnal insects attracted to our black-light and mercury vapor lamps, helping to sample and survey onsite wildlife. Overnighters will be welcome to check the light stations anytime all night long! We suggest you dress warmly and pack bug spray and something warm to drink.

Observatory Park is located at 10610 Clay Street in Montville Township. With questions, please call 440-286-9516.
