Eighth Graders Compete in Future City Competitions
Cardinal Middle School sent 8th graders Emily C., Grace G., and John K. to Columbus on Saturday, January 14th to participate in the Future City Competition – Ohio Region. This was the culminating event of weeks and months of work from a group of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders in Mr. Spence’s Future City class.
During the 2nd grading period, students created a virtual city and 3D model, and also crafted a research essay and a 7 minute presentation to highlight their work. These are the items the students presented at the competition. Mr. Shaun Spence says, “The presentation team performed well, leaving a strong impression with some of the judges – they represented Cardinal proudly!” Congratulations to the team and all of the Future City students at CMS for their hard work and dedication. A special thank you as well to Cardinal graduate Michael Hickox (c/o 2009) and Claire Zurbuch for volunteering their time to support the students.

Rotary Club Donates Dictionaries to Third Graders
All of our 3rd graders now have brand new Dictionaries to utilize in the classroom (or at home) thanks to the Rotary Club of Burton Middlefield! On Thursday, January 19th, members of the Rotary visited our 3rd grade classes to hand out the dictionaries, show students how to use them, point out important resources within the dictionary (such as weights and measurements, the 50 states, and the list of Presidents – among other things), and talk a little bit about what Rotary Club does in local communities.
The dictionary donation is something the club does every year for 3rd graders here at Cardinal and also at Newbury, Berkshire, and St. Helen’s schools. Thank you Rotary members for providing this wonderful resource for our students!

Three High School Athletes Named Players of the Week
Congratulations to Cardinal High School junior Robbie M. on being named a Ward’s Lawn Care & Landscape Co. Player of the Week for the week ending January 8! Robbie’s 40 points with 29 rebounds and 5 steals in two games helped secure the distinction for him. Coach Jon Cummins says, “Robbie carried us in the win against Fairport with his willingness to crash the boards all night, he had nine offensive rebounds and eight defensive boards. I’ve been challenging him in practice to be more aggressive on the offensive glass and he responded very well.”
Senior girls basketball player Dawn S. also landed on the list for the week ending January 15th. Dawn scored 12 points, was 100% from the free throw line, and had three steals in the team’s win over rival Berkshire. Coach Luke Kruse says, “Dawn played the game of her career in the biggest game of her career. She had two ‘and ones’ at key moments in the game to give us the momentum and also had several timely steals on defense. Her 12 points were a career high.”
The second high school athlete to make the list on January 15th was freshman wrestler Mike L. He recorded five points to win the Berkshire Tournament. Coach Jeff Zeigler says, “Michael put together an outstanding day with five pins. We see it as coaches what he is capable of. It’s a lot of things, it’s mental with him and a confidence thing and getting him to wrestle a full six minutes, he likes to coast, and he didn’t today. He was aggressive the whole day, all day, every match and got five pins. It was a great day for him.”
Congratulations Robbie, Dawn, and Mike!
