Preschool Smarts – An Artsy Alternative to Early Learning

How about a learning program based in singing, dancing, exercise, stories, and ART! Perhaps you’re on the lookout for an early learning center for your active, curious, little kiddo but are not sure you want to place him into a traditional preschool setting. Maybe you feel a more creative atmosphere would be ideal; a place where his individuality is nurtured, where there is structure and a tentative schedule, but where there is also the freedom to change if something more interesting and educational pops up. At MC Studio in Burton Village where Carlene Exline (better known as Miss Car) has transformed her art space to accommodate little learners, you’ll find all of that and so much more!  Learning those math basics and ABCs has just taken on a whole new excitement!

When you first enter this charming old red building that sits right behind the Burton Public Library on Baird Street, you will see lots of SPACE! Its high ceilings, large windows, and 3000 square feet of wooden floors, which were once used as the public school gymnasium, provide seemingly endless sources for fun and learning. There are no walls, only many learning areas, so children are in view at all times. The vintage walls are painted blue and yellow and have been tastefully decorated with a variety of interesting visuals from paintings and collages to the usual letters and maps found in learning centers.

Each day is consists of numerous 15 and 30 minute segments which include creative movement, songs, music class, educational games, outdoor exploration and story time. The crux of the program is centered in what Carlene calls smARTs.

I believe that the smARTs program is different from other programs because it is based on your child! Not the average child, Your Child. The program will grow and build upon your child’s love of learning. Preschool smARTs is an interest based preschool. The smARTs program is also art based which means that your child will learn through hands on creative activities in each subject. I want your child to feel like they are at home. If they feel like wearing their pajamas to school, they can! If they want to bring their breakfast with them, they can do that too! Please send your child to school with anything that makes them feel at home; a blanket, stuffed animal, etc. We will put these favorite things in view during our activities, and just knowing that they are there will help your child feel more comfortable. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to nurture the skills, gifts, talents and abilities in each child and to provide a positive atmosphere to encourage their growth and development.”

So THIS is what they do with left over paint!

Carlene started the preschool after being asked many times by parents of children who took art classes from her to please do so. Classes are now offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 a.m. until noon, and Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. depending on the age of your child. You may come all of those days or just one or two of them. You choose what works best for your family.  You will find Carlene to be a very down-to-earth, relaxed, caring, creative person who is always looking to provide learning which is in your child’s best interest.
