Spend a Summer Night at the Drive-In

Taking in a drive-in movie is one of those quintessentially American experiences. Unfortunately, according to nerve.com, there are only 338 drive-ins left in the entire US. Lucky for us, we’ve got one right here in our own backyard. The Mayfield Road Drive-In Theatre is located on Mayfield Road (State Route 322) just west of State Route 44. During the summer and early fall season, their one screen shows a double feature seven days a week.

If you’re trying to come up with a unique way to enjoy a little more summertime fun, why not pack up a carload of friends and see a double-feature for just $20 per carload. The box office opens at 8 p.m., and the first feature starts at 9:30 p.m., giving you and your group time to hang out and set up your own outdoor screening room. Take a look here to see what first-run movies they feature this week. Don’t forget to pack your chairs, blankets and bug spray!

The concession stand features a lot of your favorite snacks and drinks. And, without concession sales, the drive-in could not exist. As such, outside food and beverages are restricted. Though patrons are allowed to bring bottled water, any other food and drink brought to the drive-in requires the purchase of a food permit upon admission. A food permit is available for $5.00 per car, per visit, and allows you to bring in your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movies.

In addition, before the first feature on select Fridays and Saturdays, the Mayfield Drive-In Theatre features entertainment. Friday nights feature local singers and song writers like Cullen Davis and Alex Jackson. Saturday evening performances feature full bands like Yesterday & Today, the Ryans, and the Attention Deficit Glee Club Band. Where else can you see live entertainment and two feature-length films for such a bargain price? Check out the list of performers and dates here.

Summer is an excellent time to spend a night under the stars enjoying great movies with your loved ones. Just like summer evenings, drive-in theatres won’t be around forever. The season is brief, so get out there while you can and make some memories with your friends and family. When the season has passed, you’ll be glad you did!
