World Autism Awareness Day 2013

How Will You Light It Up Blue?

Light It Up Blue is an event sponsored by Autism Speaks which happens on April 2, World Autism Awareness Day. During the event, businesses across the world show their support for the autism community by lighting up their building with blue lights. Events and activities planned on 6 continents and more than 60 countries around the globe.

People across the country show their support by wearing blue, too. This is intended to raise international awareness of autism as a growing public health crisis.

Light It Up Blue is a great way to explain autism to class mates. Here are a few examples of what could be done:

  • Counselors can be brought in to the class room to explain the disorder.
  • Children can be encouraged to Light It Up Blue by simply wearing a blue shirt.
  • Light your school blue by applying blue filters/ gels to exterior lighting or by blue light bulbs.
  • Organize an art contest. Winning entries can be displayed throughout the month.
  • Organize a fundraiser, like a teeter totter marathon; the more fun – the more kids will want to participate.
  • School newsletter can mention WAAD, Light It Up Blue.
  • Wear blue…encourage all teachers and staff to wear blue on April 2 or any other designated day in April (Autism Awareness Month).
  • You can also upload a photo of your whole school in blue
