Genealogy Research Opportunities Abound on Library Website

Genealogists have reason to rejoice. Finding deceased people buried in Geauga County just got a lot easier. Thanks to a six-month initiative involving a collaboration between the Genealogy Department’s Cheryl McClellan and Jeannette (Teeter) Grosvenor, along with GCPL (Geauga County Public Library) Webmaster Mike Kehoe, anyone researching township cemetery lists will be able to easily peruse records by surname, section, and lot.

The web-based cemetery project totals more than 500 pages and includes all cemeteries in the county except the large, privately owned All Soul’s Cemetery in Chardon Township and Western Reserve Memorial Gardens in Chesterland.

“These records were originally compiled on floppy discs and jump drives,” says McClellan, Genealogist. “Teeter Grosvenor and her volunteers have been painstakingly collecting cemetery records for years, but translating them from spreadsheets compiled in different programs into one cohesive web page that looked pleasing was challenging. We are proud to finally be able to offer this organized compilation of cemetery records. Genealogists all around the world with connections to Geauga County will find this resource to be a valuable treasure of information.” Additional genealogy databases will soon be added to GCPL’s website.
