Geauga Lyric Theater’s 61st season is opening with a classic on September 11.

The 39 Steps may be familiar to some as an Alfred Hitchcock movie, but director Art Suskin is loving the play. “There is surprising interplay of an exciting spy story with some of the silliest and funniest scenes you will ever see; four actors playing 120-plus roles at breakneck speed. What a delight!” The show will run Fridays through Sundays until Sept. 27.

The actors are also loving it. Caleb Venman, who plays Richard Hannay shares his favorite aspect of the show stating, “It’s probably the closest thing I’ll get to playing James Bond.” Cara Battaglia, who plays three characters, is enjoying the talent of the cast. She explains, “It’s a great challenge to work with them and match their energy and humor every night (and not just laugh constantly at ourselves and each other!)”  The “clowns” of the show, who rush from character to character, are Justin Simons and Evan Graham. Simon admits that keeping all the characters and accents straight is giving him a work-out, and Graham is having the time of his life.

Suskin, who has directed professionally for fifty years, is very excited about his debut at GLTG. He states, “I was knocked out by the level of excellence of GLTG’s staff and designers and the eagerness the actors showed in tackling this funny mountain of a production. Come see this show! You will have a great time!”
