SUMMARY:Mentor Marsh Salt Fill Remediation: A Story Worth Sharing
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon welcomes Bill Zawiski of the Ohio EPA as he presents “Mentor Marsh Salt Fill Remediation: A Story Worth Sharing” 7:00 pm Tuesday\, January 17 at Penitentiary Glen Reservation.\n  \nThe program is open to the public and will describe the damage done to the Marsh in the 1960s when salt-mine tailings were dumped into Blackbrook Creek. This action killed the surrounding swamp forest and allowed an invasive tall grass\, Phragmites\, to take over. Thanks to the settlement of a lawsuit\, the remediation project began this summer and by the end of November had removed over 178\,000 tons of salt and fly ash in 9\,001 truckloads. About nine acres at the south corner of the Marsh’s eastern basin will be transferred to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and they will begin adding native wetland plants to restore biodiversity\, much as they have done in the other 800 acres of the Marsh. \n  \nOnce the dense reed grass was removed\, wetland plants and shrubs missing for decades sprang from the seedbank\, creating habitat for insects\, amphibians and birds. Northern Pike are spawning here and Yellow Perch fingerlings use the Marsh as a nursery. Wildlife observers are seeing otter and beaver with more frequency. \nThe National Park Service designated Mentor Marsh as a National Natural Landmark in 1966. In 1971\, Ohio dedicated Mentor Marsh as its first State Nature Preserve. \nProgram attendees are asked to bring their own mugs for coffee. DESCRIPTION:1-2-3\, time for Blackbrook Audubon’s CBC\n  \nWhite Breasted Nuthatch by Laurie White\nBlackbrook Audubon Society invites everyone to add their observations to the 123rd annual Christmas Bird Count Sunday\, December 18. Blackbrook encourages birders of all skill levels to join the CBC at the start time of your choosing in one of two ways: in the field or from the comfort of your own home. \nThe object of the CBC is to count all the bird species and number of birds in a 15-mile diameter circle in one 24-hour period between December 14 and January 5. Anyone living within the circle can also report birds at their feeder. To be assigned to a team covering a specific area on foot or in a vehicle\, or to report backyard feeder counts\, contact Dan Donaldson\, the compiler for Blackbrook’s circle\, at danook057@yahoo.com. He will provide details on how to join the virtual tally party at 7:00 p.m. when everyone can share stories of the day’s census. \nSince this year’s count takes place on a Sunday\, the usual lunch venue is not available. Instead\, counters can meet at Hellriegel’s Inn\, 1840 Mentor Ave.\, Painesville at 11:30 a.m. Their breakfast buffet runs till 1:00 p.m. or their regular lunch menu is available at 11:30. Blackbrook requests RSVPs to danook057@yahoo.com for those who plan to attend so a block of tables can be reserved. Counters may choose to head back out to add to their lists. \nBlackbrook’s CBC circle extends from Lost Nation Airport to Western Perry\, Lake Erie south to Holden Arboretum and Big Creek Park in Geauga County. \nBlackbrook Audubon’s territory covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake counties. The Ashtabula CBC\, centered just east of Kingsville\, will be Saturday\, December 31. Marc Hanneman compiles this count which covers both Ashtabula and Conneaut Harbors\, as well as several Ashtabula County Metroparks. Census takers in the NEO circles share the same mission and may count on the same day as birders in some of these far-off places. SUMMARY:Audubon monitors Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon welcomes birders of all skill levels to their monthly Important Bird Area (IBA) walk at 8:00 a.m. Sunday\, July 24. \nMeet at the entrance gate to the utility pipeline access road\, an otherwise restricted area\, by the intersection of Woodridge Lane and Forest Road in Mentor Headlands. This will be a closed program with group birding together\, not the open-house style that’s offered by the Marsh Nature Center staff on the second Saturday morning of each month. After birding the pipeline\, participants will explore the public path that leads to the interior of the Marsh\, the Wake Robin Trail boardwalk. Parking is available along the south side of Woodridge Lane or in the lot at 8936 Woodridge at the trailhead of Wake Robin. This trail begins with a steep hill with rope railing. \nThe June visit featured several parent birds either carrying food or feeding it to their young. The group heard begging calls from juvenile American Crow and watched  a Barn Swallow transfer food to her eager fledgling. Although the water level was noticeably low in the Marsh\, other wildlife that turned up near the boardwalk included turtles\, six species of butterfly\, a muskrat and green frog. \nMentor Marsh was declared Ohio’s first state nature preserve in 1971.  As part of the Grand River – Lower Watershed IBA\, the Marsh represents the old outlet of the Grand River into Lake Erie. \nBlackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake Counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon invites birders of all skill levels on a field trip to Geauga County farm country Saturday\, February 19. This will be during the weekend of the Great Backyard Bird Count so we’ll refer to it as the Geauga Farm Fields Count. We’ll meet at Walter C. Best Wildlife Preserve\, 11620 Ravenna Rd. Munson Twp.\, about 2 miles south of Chardon Square at 8:30 a.m. Pull into the parking lot right on Ravenna Road\, or 44 South. It’s labeled Best Wildlife Preserve\, but is north of the actual park entrance. We’ll provide a rough map of our route when we meet at the Best Preserve lot on Rt. 44. \nOur first destination will be the Amish farm fields on Hayes Road\, just east of Middlefield. We’ll make a pit stop at Swine Creek Reservation and head down to more fields on Soltis Road south of Parkman. In these open spaces\, we hope to find Snow Buntings\, Lapland Longspurs and Horned Larks foraging on the ground with Rough-legged Hawks\, Northern Harriers and American Kestrels overhead. DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon Society will visit LaDue Reservoir\, the largest body of water in Geauga County\, to look for swans\, ducks and grebes. Birders of all skill levels should meet in the parking lot of the boathouse at 17759 Valley Road in Auburn Twp. at 9:00 a.m.\, Saturday\, November 20. The group will bird the edge of the reservoir along Valley Road. Blackbrook also plans to check the bridges over LaDue on Rt. 44\, which has a large parking area\, and Auburn Road\, which has limited parking. \nAs participants travel on State Rt. 44 toward 422\, E. Washington St. comes off Rt. 44 and leads to the boathouse to the east. DESCRIPTION:As fall migration winds down\, Blackbrook Audubon invites everyone to hear “Monitoring Bird Migration: Evolving Technologies and Remarkable Discoveries” by Dr. Andy Jones of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. This free presentation will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday\, November 16 at Geauga Park District’s The West Woods Nature Center. \nBanding birds and reporting sightings on eBird continue to help in understanding bird migration\, but the array of technologies available to ornithologists is constantly changing. New tools both large and tiny are giving fresh insights into individual birds’ migratory behaviors. Dr. Jones will go over several of these newer systems\, including the current status of the Motus network. The northeast corner of Ohio has a gap on the Motus map and Blackbrook Audubon is looking into filling that void. \nParticipants can attend the program in person or register on the event page of blackbrookaudubon.org to receive a link to view the program live online. While the program starts at 7:00 p.m.\, Trevor Wearstler\, the host and president of Blackbrook\, will open access to the meeting about 6:30 p.m. so people can familiarize themselves with the software features or chat with other attendees.
