SUMMARY:Mentor Marsh Salt Fill Remediation: A Story Worth Sharing
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon welcomes Bill Zawiski of the Ohio EPA as he presents “Mentor Marsh Salt Fill Remediation: A Story Worth Sharing” 7:00 pm Tuesday\, January 17 at Penitentiary Glen Reservation.\n  \nThe program is open to the public and will describe the damage done to the Marsh in the 1960s when salt-mine tailings were dumped into Blackbrook Creek. This action killed the surrounding swamp forest and allowed an invasive tall grass\, Phragmites\, to take over. Thanks to the settlement of a lawsuit\, the remediation project began this summer and by the end of November had removed over 178\,000 tons of salt and fly ash in 9\,001 truckloads. About nine acres at the south corner of the Marsh’s eastern basin will be transferred to the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and they will begin adding native wetland plants to restore biodiversity\, much as they have done in the other 800 acres of the Marsh. \n  \nOnce the dense reed grass was removed\, wetland plants and shrubs missing for decades sprang from the seedbank\, creating habitat for insects\, amphibians and birds. Northern Pike are spawning here and Yellow Perch fingerlings use the Marsh as a nursery. Wildlife observers are seeing otter and beaver with more frequency. \nThe National Park Service designated Mentor Marsh as a National Natural Landmark in 1966. In 1971\, Ohio dedicated Mentor Marsh as its first State Nature Preserve. \nProgram attendees are asked to bring their own mugs for coffee. Penitentiary Glen is at 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland. \nBlackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake Counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information\, email blackbrookaud@aol.com. Programs cancelled due to weather are announced on the iAlert system. \n\n

SUMMARY:New Years' Eve Eve Feels Like OM Goat Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Come out to the farm to meet the Feels Like OM yoga goats for some relaxing yoga and a goat-tastic day!\n\n\nJoin our New Years’ Eve Eve goat yoga class to celebrate the New Year with the goats! This is a Friday evening class and the Farm is enchanting at night with all the twinkle lights! It will be a very special class! We will be in the driveway to park everyone safely. \n \nWhy Feels Like OM Goat Yoga? \n#1. Creating Authentic Connection ~ in today’s world\, many people are looking at getting back to basics. The age of texting and online communication can make people feel disconnected. Taking your workout from the gym or yoga studio out into nature and adding an animal can capture the simplicity of nature. Connect with nature\, connect with yourself\, connect with animals. \n#2. AAA: Animal- Assisted Activities \nTherapeutic mental and physical benefits ~ Many people come to yoga not just for a workout\, but to relax and decompress. Surrounding yourself with animals can lower rates of depression\, anxiety\, high blood pressure\, and loneliness. Bonding with animals has been shown to release mood elevating hormones. It decreases stress and provides a happy escape. \n#3. Goats are HILARIOUS! \n Goats are curious and also have no understanding of personal space! They are likely to sit on your mat\, walk across your legs\, hop on your back and maybe even nibble your toes. Our friendly and playful baby yoga goats will be a delight during this special event! This is truly as fun as it sounds and you will leave feeling light and happy! \n For more information or pictures of our goats\, check out our website http://feelslikehomefarm.com/meet-the-goats.html. \nFeels Like Om Goat Yoga is for everyone and we welcome all fitness levels. Our cold weather classes are back! We will be offering smaller yoga classes throughout the cold weather. Class will be inside in the main barn! \nIN COMPLIANCE WITH OHIO GUIDELINES: \n-PARTICIPANTS DISPLAYING COVID SYMPTOMS WILL BE DECLINED TO ENTER \n-WE RECOMMEND USE OF HAND SANITIZER UPON ENTERING AND EXITING \n-NO OTHER VISITORS WILL BE ALLOWED ON THE PROPERTY OTHER THAN YOGA PARTICIPANTS \nRefund Policy: Based on Ohio State Law for events\, we are required to issue a refund within 3 days of the ticket purchase. After that\, the ticket is non-refundable\, however\, we will try to work with you on getting a refund. If there is a waiting list for the class we will try to switch your ticket over to another yogi. \n10 mats will be available\, but you will want at least one LARGE TOWEL to lay down on your mat\, with a possible extra towel in case of “accidents”. Wear appropriate clothing for a barn and the weather. You will get dirty and may be nibbled or jumped on by a goat! Please wear long hair in a ponytail unless you want a haircut! \nWe will send out an email the week before your class with details about directions and reminders of what to bring as well as a weather update. Please be on the lookout for this. Check your SPAM if you haven’t received it by Thursday before your class. There is NO NEED to print your ticket. \nFor more information about this or any of our programs\, or to be added to our email list\, please call Alissa at 440-724-5121 or email feelslikehome22@yahoo.com. \n \nwww.feelslikehomefarm.com
