SUMMARY:Blackbrook Audubon Society - Migrating Songbirds & Raptors
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon Society will look for migrating songbirds and raptors at Erie Bluffs State Park\, 12 miles west of Erie\, Pennsylvania on Sunday\, October 17.  Birders of all skill levels are invited to meet at the main parking lot at 11122 West Lake Road\, Lake City\, PA at 9:30 a.m. This park is approximately one hour from Mentor. \nSections of Erie Bluffs State Park formerly used for agriculture are undergoing extensive restoration efforts to reclaim the black oak woodland/savanna and sand barren ecosystems of the Great Lakes region. The diversity of landforms found in the park provide habitat for plant species rare or absent in other parts of Pennsylvania — the most unusual being the pumpkin ash and the Shumard oak. \nParticipants should dress for windy weather and bring a lunch. The field trip coordinators will check with a nearby restaurant\, All Aboard Dinor in Lake City\, closer to the day of the trip to see if it will be open. \nAlthough Erie County is not part of Pennsylvania’s quarantine area for the spotted lanternfly\, travelers into the state should be aware of this invasive insect and take precautions to prevent its spread. \nBlackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake Counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information\, email blackbrookaud@aol.com. Follow Blackbrook Audubon Society on Facebook for updates. \n\n

SUMMARY:Audubon Presents “Amazing Galapagos” – In Person & Virtual
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon Society invites everyone to the “Amazing Galapagos”  a free presentation by photographer Alan Studt and Gale Franko 7:00 p.m. Tuesday\, October 19 at Penitentiary Glen’s Nature Center in Kirtland. They will take the audience 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador to the place where Darwin’s theories were born and help them experience giant tortoises\, prehistoric-looking iguanas\, and other species found nowhere else on earth. The range of the Galapagos Penguin extends just beyond the equator\, making this penguin the only one to live in the northern hemisphere. \nParticipants can attend the program in person or register on the event page of blackbrookaudubon.org to receive a link to view the program live online. While the program starts at 7:00 p.m.\, Trevor Wearstler\, the host and president of Blackbrook\, will open access to the meeting about 6:30 p.m. so people can familiarize themselves with the software features or chat with other attendees. Refreshments will not be served at the in-person program. \nBlackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake Counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information\, email blackbrookaud@aol.com. Follow Blackbrook Audubon Society on Facebook for updates. \n\n

SUMMARY:Blackbrook Audubon - Important Bird Area walk
DESCRIPTION:Audubon monitors Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve\n\nBlackbrook Audubon welcomes nature enthusiasts to their monthly Important Bird Area walk at 8:00 a.m. Sunday\, October 24. Meet at the entrance gate to the utility pipeline access road\, an otherwise restricted area\, by the intersection of Woodridge Lane and Forest Road in Mentor Headlands. This will be a closed program with group birding together\, not the open-house style that’s offered by the Marsh Nature Center staff on the second Saturday morning of each month. After birding the pipeline\, participants will explore the other path that leads to the interior of the Marsh\, the Wake Robin Trail boardwalk. Parking is available along the south side of Woodridge Lane or in the lot at 8936 Woodridge at the trailhead of Wake Robin. This trail begins with a steep hill with rope railing. \nIn September the group had six species of raptors\, five warblers\, five woodpeckers\, an Olive-sided Flycatcher and views of the Marsh Wren\, whom they had only heard in prior visits. \nBlackbrook Audubon covers Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake Counties as the local chapter of National Audubon Society. For more information\, email blackbrookaud@aol.com or rdonaldson@cmnh.org. Follow Blackbrook Audubon Society on Facebook for updates. \n\n
