SUMMARY:Twilight Trolley: Ghosts of the C&E Interurban
DESCRIPTION:Explore the rail beds with Sparky Wier and Rita Railbane \nGoing back in time is always thrilling. But add some big personalities from that classic era\, the era of the railways in Geauga County\, and you’re in for a real treat. \nJust one week before the spookiest day of the year\, at dusk\, walk the real-life rail beds of ole as two gadabout ghosts regale you on the Cleveland & Eastern Interurban electric-powered railway. \n \nWhat: Twilight Trolley: Ghosts of the C&E Interurban \nWhen: Friday\, October 24 – 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: The Rookery\, Great Blue Heron Lodge\, 10110 Cedar Road\, Munson Twp. \nThe two will be something to behold – and give you a real sense of the invention of transportation by rail. \nWhile jolly trolley conductor Sparky Wier recalls the good old trolley days\, crabby rider Rita Railbane will counter with retorts: safety measures vs. mishaps and derailments; luxury vs. long layovers; stark station conditions vs. comfortable accommodations. And while Sparky effuses about the unsurpassed efficiency of a smooth 75-minute trip from Chardon to downtown Cleveland in the days of the horse and buggy\, Rita will whine about the rough ride. Because\, as you know\, there’s one in every crowd. \nThe C&E trolley line rolled out of Cleveland and traversed Geauga County from 1900-1925. Registration is not required for this program\, best suited for those school age and older. Call 440-286-9516 with questions. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube. \nSee our event calendar for upcoming programs with the Geauga Park District. \n

SUMMARY:Hogs Gone Wild and Other Problem Wildlife
DESCRIPTION:What two non-native species teach us about what NOT to do \nTwo animals introduced to the U.S. long ago clearly demonstrate the pitfalls of transferring wildlife outside their natural range. Now two biologists from the USDA\, Craig Hicks and Caleb Wellman\, are coming to Geauga Park District to detail how these invasive species threaten Ohio’s agriculture and ecosystems. \nWhat: Hogs Gone Wild and Other Problem Wildlife \nWhen: Tuesday\, October 21 – 7-8:30 p.m. \nWhere: Big Creek Park\, Donald W. Meyer Center\, 9160 Robinson Road\, Chardon Twp. \nThose animals on the agenda are feral swine and mute swans. \n \n \nThe first invited invader\, brought here almost 500 years ago\, now wreaks havoc in 39 states when\, three decades ago\, it was only found in 17 states. Sometimes called a feral pig\, wild boar or razorback\, feral swine eat farmers’ crops\, damage habitat with their wallowing and rooting\, carry at least 30 diseases\, and “hog” resources needed by native wild turkey\, blue jays and other wildlife\, such as acorns. Feral swine are found in more than 20 counties in Ohio\, including Ashtabula\, and breed in 13 counties. \nOur second case\, a bird released in North America in the late 1800s for a seemingly innocent purpose\, first turned up in Ohio just over 100 years ago. We wanted Mute Swans to adorn ponds\, but when we looked harder\, we found an “ugly duckling” that destroys wetlands with feeding habits that increase water turbidity and reduce submerged aquatic vegetation. About the size of our native Trumpeter Swan\, Mute Swans are not silent in their defense of territory and demand for the limited marsh space still found in Ohio. \nMr. Hicks and Mr. Wellman plan to tell us what steps are being taken to monitor swine and swan and to mitigate their damage\, in cooperation with the Ohio Division of Wildlife and other agencies. Ohio Wildlife Services is conducting intense management efforts to reduce damage and loss in southeastern Ohio\, and to eliminate newly emergent populations of feral swine in the western and northern portions of the state. \nThe Meyer Center is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration is not required to attend this talk\, best suited for those school aged and older. Call 440-296-9516 with questions. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube. \nSee our event calendar for upcoming programs with the Geauga Park District.

SUMMARY:Halloween Blacklight Hike and Campfire
DESCRIPTION:Use black light to observe creepy-crawlies in the woods \nWhat glows under a black light is called a phosophor – any substance that emits visible light in response to some sort of radiation\, in this case the black light’s UV radiation. (Don’t worry\, it’s not enough to hurt you.) \nOf course what glows under a black light is also really eerie and cool\, making it the perfect subject matter to explore around Halloween time. \nLinking the coolness of nature with the coolness of black lights\, all are invited to join Geauga Park District for this fun\, purplish program in the park (and dress in costume to really soak in the spirit): \n \nWhat: Halloween Blacklight Hike and Campfire \nWhen: Saturday\, October 18 – 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: Sunnybrook Preserve\, 12474 Heath Road\, Chester Township \nFirst\, a spooky-but-not-too-scary hike\, led by Naturalist Linda Gilbert\, will uncover awesome plants and other creepy-crawlies as they look under the black light beam. Then the group will gather around the campfire for stories and general seasonal socializing in the comfort of your great outdoors. \nRegistration is not required; school age and up\, please. Call 440-286-9516 with questions. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube. \nClick here for more Geauga Park District events.
