National Young Readers Week kicked off with a huge challenge at Jordak Elementary and Cardinal Intermediate schools on Nov. 9. Principals Ms. Bearer and Mrs. Fulton accepted the Principal’s Challenge to read all day long and spent the entire day going from classroom to classroom (and even went out to recess) to read to and with their students!

The Challenge was part of the Pizza Hut Official BOOK IT! Program’s challenge for principals to be examples for literacy. Ms. Bearer and Mrs. Fulton wore their pajamas to school so they were comfortable during their marathon challenge and invited all of the students to do the same!

“Reading is the foundation to learning for these students,” says Assistant Principal Julie Fulton. “The more we, as educators and administrators, can do to show students how fun reading can be, the more they’re (hopefully) going to want to read, which is only going to enhance their learning in the classroom.”

One lucky elementary school principal will win 101 copies of the tenth book in the Wimpy Kid series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School for their school’s library. Jeff Kinney, author of the Wimpy Kid books, will autograph one of the books for the principal who read their heart out. Winners should be announced soon – good luck Ms. Bearer and Mrs. Fulton!
