Geauga Park District Quarterly Events Calendar: July 2018

  • Nature Explorers: Streamlife Safari (Ages 6-7) – Wednesday, July 11th, 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at The West Woods, Deer Run Shelter

Nature Explorers, venture into a forested stream to discover wildlife such as crayfish, salamanders and crane fly larva. Outdoors, even in light rain, so please dress accordingly and wear shoes or boots for wading in a rocky stream; no sandals, please. DROP-OFF PROGRAM: Children should be dropped off by their parents at 9:30 a.m. and picked up at 11:00 a.m. Shelter. Registration required.

  • Timbertots: Incredible Insects! (Ages 3-5 w/adult) – Wednesday, July 11th, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. & 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Turkey Ridge Shelter

Let’s explore pond, field and forest in search of our six-legged friends! Outdoors, weather permitting, so please dress accordingly. Program designed for a specified age group; older or younger siblings will not be considered registered participants. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

  • West Woods Wednesdays Farm Market – Wednesday, July 11th, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Deer Run & Turkey Run Shelters

Purchase locally made/grown items at The West Woods the second Wednesday of each month this summer, June through September! Strolling musicians and a food truck selling dinner/snacks will make your evening more enjoyable. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • The Parker Solar Probe – Friday, July 13th, 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center

Learn about NASA’s new space probe that launches toward the sun this summer. Weather permitting, program will be followed by night sky viewing using Oberle Observatory telescopes until 11 PM. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Nature Trek Fitness Hike – Saturday, July 14th, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at Frohring Meadows

Let’s move it, people! Burn off those calories on this fitness hike along the beautiful trails of Frohring Meadows and learn some cool Nature facts along the way! Participants should have the ability to walk at least three miles with some small hills, rain or shine, so please dress accordingly and bring water.

  • Night Sky Viewing – Saturday, July 14th, 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. at Observatory Park

Observe the wonders of the night sky using the Oberle telescope! If weather conditions prevent sky viewing, join us for a planetarium presentation inside. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Nights Out in the Parks: Movie Night “Peter Rabbit” – Saturday, July 14th, 8:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. at Observatory Park

Bring the family out to enjoy the recent motion picture “Peter Rabbit.” Pre-show activities begin at 8:00 p.m. and include the Geauga County Public Library’s Fun Bus; movie at dark; and night sky viewing afterwards, weather permitting. Free popcorn and lemonade, plus free ice cream treats while supplies last! Bring your own blankets and lawn chairs.

  • Mayer Preserve Backcountry Hike Van Trip – Sunday, July 15th, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Nature Center

Be transported by a park van to this limited-access Geauga Park District preserve in Chester Township. This rugged hike which will include stream crossings, steep grades and off-trail obstacles like downed trees as you explore cool streams, steep ravines and mature forests. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes with good traction that can get wet. Bring a water bottle and snacks. Registration required.

  • Fairy Candle Foray Hound Hike – Sunday, July 15th, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. at Swine Creek Reservation, Lodge Parking Lot

Bring your dog on this special summer hound hike to explore a wooded ravine. Hike along a babbling stream and learn about the magical fairy candles that grow in this habitat. Dogs must be on a leash 8 foot max length and kept under control at all times; aggressive dogs and those with excessive barking will be asked to leave. Bring water for your dog and materials to clean up after your dog along the trail. NATURE’S NOT TO BE MISSED.

  • The Sky Tonight Planetarium Show – Sunday, July 15th, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Observatory Park, Robert McCullough Science Center

Join us for a planetarium presentation on what to watch for in the night sky this week. Building open house 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Weather permitting, also view the sun using our safe solar-viewing equipment. Wheelchair/stroller accessible.

  • Adventure Day Camp (Youth entering grades 5-7) – Monday, July 16th – Friday, July 20th, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at The West Woods, Nature Center – Fee: $150 – See July 9th for description. Registration required.
  • Nature Explorers: Bike Bingo (Ages 6-7) – Monday, July 16th, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands

Bring your bike and a camera to enjoy a pedaling adventure on The Maple Highlands Trail! We’ll keep an eye out for any animals along the way as we play wildlife bike bingo and photograph what we see. Participants must be able to ride without training wheels, and must wear helmets. DROP-OFF PROGRAM: Children should be dropped off by their parents at 1:00 p.m. and picked up at 3:00 p.m. Outdoors, even in light rain, so please dress accordingly and wear sturdy shoes; no sandals or flip-flops. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.

  • Nature Explorers: Bike Bingo (Ages 8-11) – Tuesday, July 17th, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands – See July 16th for description. Wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.
  • Geauga Walkers (For active seniors) – Tuesday, July 17th, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. at Claridon Woodlands

Join other active seniors on weekly hikes of 1-1 ½ miles long in Geauga County and the surrounding area. A naturalist leads hikes scheduled in Geauga Park District parks. Call Geauga Senior Center for full schedule, 440-279-2137.

  • Elderberries: Kayaking – Thursday, July 19th, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Headwaters Park, Boathouse

Join the Geauga County Department on Aging and University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center as we explore the water from kayaks. Three sessions of kayaking will be followed by a picnic lunch and EZ Go Cart tours of the park. Register for the event online, then sign up on site for each kayak session the day of the event. Partially wheelchair/stroller accessible. Registration required.
