Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village will be celebrating the ASPCA’s National Help a Horse Day again this year by hosting a “Help a Horse Day” event on Sunday, April 23rd from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Rescue Village. This nationwide event is for rescues and sanctuaries to raise awareness about the lifesaving work they do year-round to care for at-risk horses.
One of the horses Rescue Village has helped this year is Noah. Noah was not the typical humane case of neglect we often see. He spent most of his life working hard. Whether he was performing on the track or hauling buggies and carts, Noah endured extreme fatigue and his body showed that.
Noah’s owner, before Rescue Village, was a young Amish man who hadn’t owned Noah very long and was trying his best to put weight on Noah. Unfortunately, even his honest efforts weren’t yielding results and the vet approached Rescue Village about taking Noah as a rehabilitation partnership in August of 2016.
Since then, Noah’s road to recovery has been long and trying. In the past 8 months, he has been on specialty feed and nutritional supplements, gone through injectable and oral steroid regimes, acupuncture, gastric ulcer medication, and even went to OSU for a full workup and extensive testing to rule out cancer of the GI tract.
Despite the time, energy and cost, the Rescue Village team has continued to care for Noah and will continue to do so no matter how long it takes. He may still be thin appearance-wise, but we have seen great improvements in both his demeanor and his health. He has slowly come out of his hardened work-horse mentality. He has learned to enjoy receiving attention and grooming, and has even started to play with other horses, when before he would shy away from any and all interactions.
Rescue Village is collecting donations throughout the month of April, which is also Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, leading up to Help a Horse Day to support the horses in our care, including Noah.
