SUMMARY:Ohio's Snowshoe Hare Management
DESCRIPTION:ODNR wildlife biologist to give the scoop on reintroduction efforts\nThe startling white Snowshoe Hare is very common in the northern forests of North America. But did you know it is native to parts of Ohio as well? \nJoin Wildlife Biologist Mark Wiley of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife to cover its Ohio history\, its current status in the state\, and the ODNR’s most recent reintroduction efforts. \nWhat: Ohio’s Snowshoe Hare Management \nWhen: Sunday\, February 2 – 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. \nWhere: The West Woods Nature Center\n9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87)\, Russell Township \nThe most recent hare reintroduction efforts ran from 2000 to 2007\, with releases in Ashtabula and Geauga counties. \nHare surveys in release areas were discontinued in 2012 when it was decided there were not enough hares being detected to justify the effort. “There are a variety of potential problems\, all of which have likely tipped the odds against Ohio hares\,” Mark said. “These include weather\, habitat changes\, release issues\, etc. I’m not sure we have enough information at this point to use the word ‘failed\,’ but we can safely say that we are not seeing the response we had hoped to see.” \nUsing a Powerpoint of photos and maps\, Mark will spend half the time presenting the hare facts and half the time answering questions on the topic. He may even bring a hare pelt and one of the old radio transmitters. \nRegistration is not required for this program\, which will be wheelchair/stroller accessible. Call 440-286-9516 with questions. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube.
