SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:Those who’d like to help tally winter bird life are invited to take part in the annual Christmas Bird Count for the Burton area\, from 8 to 10 a.m. at Burton Wetlands Nature Preserve\, 15681 Old Rider Road. \nBurton’s Christmas Bird Count was started by former Board of Park Commissioners President Robert McCullough in the 1950s. For more on the history on the National Audubon Society’s 114th annual event\, visit this website. \nThis year’s bird list that Chief Naturalist John Kolar and his fellow bird-counters create will be compiled with the lists of all participants counting that day within the Burton circle – that is\, a 15-mile diameter circle centered around a point\, and in this case Burton is nearest to the point. As per the rules of the Audubon count\, the circle cannot overlap with any other circle and attempts to cover a variety of bird habitat.

SUMMARY:Quilted Fabric Ornament Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Those ages 18 and older are invited to join artisan Angela Giaimo to create a unique quilted fabric ornament at her Quilted Fabric Ornament Workshop at The West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township. \nParticipation in her workshop\, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.\, costs $14 for materials and instruction. See a sample on Geauga Park District’s Facebook page. \n“I have taught this craft to many people\,” she said\, “and it has been my experience that art of any kind will always look unique. Each student will be using different fabrics\, so each ornament will look different.”  \n“I feel strongly about building up each student to be the best of themselves that they can be.” \nRegistration is required for this workshop online or by calling 440-286-9516. The facility are fully wheelchair/stroller accessible. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube.

SUMMARY:A Wild Night for Wildlife Benefit
DESCRIPTION:Aquarium fundraising event to support threatened turtle species\nSpend a Friday evening at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium to support regional efforts to protect wildlife with special focus on the exciting regional work to protect the Spotted Turtles! \nThe WildNite4WildLife: Northeast Ohio Wildlife Benefit will be held Friday\, November 15\, from 6 to 9 p.m. with tickets available online. \nWhat’s cool about this event? Besides special access to the aquarium\, there will be live music\, activities\, displays\, wildlife demonstrations\, silent auctions\, raffles and fun. \nTickets cost $20 for adults and $16 for children\, with age 2 and under free – just a nickel more expensive than general admission to the aquarium\, but all will go to benefit a good cause! Half of ticket sales will go to the sponsor organization of your choice in the form of conservation grants; the other half goes directly to Spotted Turtle work. \nWhy the Spotted Turtle?\nSpotted Turtles are an Ohio Threatened Species\, so everything we can do to protect their habitat is vital to their survival. \nNew Spotted Turtle displays at the Greater Cleveland Aquarium and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo speak on the importance of biodiversity in our region. \nGeauga Park District tracks Spotted Turtles on its property and works with the Ohio Division of Wildlife to remove overpopulated predators\, particularly raccoons\, from turtle habitats. \nRegional work by Geauga Park District\, Cleveland Museum of Natural History\, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo and Greater Cleveland Aquarium is trying to augment hatchling survival: collecting turtles found in the wild\, hatching their eggs and raising them to a size that will give them an advantage for survival upon release. \nSince the project started last year\, two baby turtles hatched from Geauga County parents. These two could be released back into the wild as soon as next year. Said Geauga Park District Park Biologist Paul Pira\, “It’s just a great cooperative project and a neat story we need to get out.” \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Howwwwwl’oween Hound Hike
DESCRIPTION:Hike Sunnybrook Preserve with your hound…in costume!\nDevil or angel\, pumpkin or scarecrow\, human or canine\, come enjoy this hike with your favorite four-legged friend. Nature lovers and good-natured dogs always look forward to Geauga Park District’s last Hound Hike of the season. Needless to say\, costumes (dogs or human) make it all the more fun! \nFrom April through October\, monthly Hound Hikes allow dog owners an opportunity to bond and enjoy a type of entertainment their canines can also enjoy. Registration is always required to keep numbers manageable online or 440-286-9516. \n“We start off every walk with everyone introducing themselves and their dogs and how old their dogs are\,” said Eileen Smith\, the Park District’s administrative services coordinator\, who enlists a family member to help her bring two German Shorthair Pointers\, Heineken and Smitty. “That provides conversation along the trail because everyone walks at his or her own pace.” \nKids often come along for the walks\, too. “They really bond over their dogs\,” Eileen said\, “Some Hound Hikers get together to walk in the parks at other times.” \nOne non-aggressive dog is allowed per handler\, who must be able to fully control his or her dog at all times on a leash no longer than eight feet. Participants must also bring their own dog towels\, water bowls\, poop scoops and bags for clean-up. If altercations or incidents occur\, problematic dogs will be asked to leave. Activities will not be wheelchair / stroller accessible. \nAgain\, registration is required for this free outdoor program\, great for all ages and all breeds of dog\, online or by calling 440-286-9516. \nGeauga Park District is online\, Facebook\, Twitter and YouTube.
