SUMMARY:Blackbrook Audubon Society Focuses on the Spotted Turtle During January 15 Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Blackbrook Audubon will offer a free presentation 7:00 p.m. Tuesday\, January 15th on how a dozen park districts and conservation organizations are collaborating to restore the spotted turtle to Northeast Ohio. Listed as a threatened species by the Ohio Division of Wildlife\, spotted turtles find fewer wetlands to breed in and endure losses from higher numbers of raccoons and capture as illegal pets. Dr. David Kriska of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and Dr. Gary Riggs\, founder of Wild4Ever\, will describe how turtles are monitored and hatchlings are given a head-start before release into suitable habitat. The multi-agency committee is SPOTD for Save and Protect Ohio Turtle Diversity. \nThe presentation is open to all and will be at Holden Arboretum\, 9550 Sperry Road in Kirtland. For more information\, visit Blackbrook Audubon Society. Follow Blackbrook Audubon Society on Facebook. Blackbrook Audubon Society is the local chapter of National Audubon covering Ashtabula\, Geauga and Lake counties. Programs cancelled due to weather will be announced on the iAlert system on WKYC-TV 3\, Newsradio WTAM 1100. \nPictured In Cover Photo: Dot\, a female spotted turtle ambassador at Lake Metroparks Nature Center\, Penitentiary Glen\, Kirtland

SUMMARY:Blackbrook Audubon Highlights Great Blue Herons
DESCRIPTION:Citizen scientists Rob and Peg Bobel will present “The Return of the Great Blues” for Blackbrook Audubon’s program at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, November 20th at Holden Arboretum. This husband and wife team has been monitoring Great Blue Heron nests in Cuyahoga Valley National Park for over 20 years. They will share a behind-the-scenes look at successes\, tragedies\, and sometimes hilarious stories about the nesting colony\, or heronry\, on Bath Road in Ohio’s only national park\, Cuyahoga Valley National Park. \nThe Bobels co-founded the Cuyahoga Valley Trails Council\, an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to improving the trails within the park. Rob retired as park engineer last year and Peg is a former director of the non-profit friends group for CVNP. \nThey have co-authored or edited three guides on trails and hiking in Northeast Ohio. Following their presentation will be a ticket auction of nature-related items. This fundraiser helps Blackbrook purchase Audubon Adventures\, an environmental education publication\, for 3rd – 5th grade students in Geauga and Lake counties. \nCreated by National Audubon Society\, Audubon Adventures comes in classroom kits that correlate to National Language Arts and Science standards. \nHolden Arboretum is at 9550 Sperry Road in Kirtland. For more information\, visit Blackbrook Audubon Society. Follow Blackbrook Audubon Society on Facebook.
