DESCRIPTION:Explore The Rookery’s namesake backcountry-style \nAn opportunity to visit a rarely explored area of your Geauga Park District is slated for early November\, but registration is required so don’t wait to sign up. \n \nWhat: Backcountry Heron Hike \nWhen: Sunday\, November 2 – 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. \nWhere: The Rookery\, 10110 Cedar Road\, Munson Twp. \nTucked back off trail at The Rookery\, there’s a treetop colony that gives the park its name. \n \nThis is your annual chance to see one of the largest Great Blue Heron rookeries in the county\, accessible only during naturalist-led programs in the autumn while the herons winter down south. \nAccording to historic accounts\, this rookery has existed for at least 70 years in its present location. The backcountry hike includes a short introduction to the Blue Heron\, acquainting you with this species’ habitat and food using pictures and props\, then a 1 1/2-to-2-mile hike to visit the nesting site. \nYou’ll be amazed that these big stick nests manage to stay up there\, way up on the top little branches of the trees! \nAgain\, registration is required at the website or 440-286-9516. School age and up recommended. Only the beginning portion of the hike is wheelchair/stroller accessible. But add some big personalities from that classic era\, the era of the railways in Geauga County\, and you’re in for a real treat. \nJust one week before the spookiest day of the year\, at dusk\, walk the real-life rail beds of ole as two gadabout ghosts regale you on the Cleveland & Eastern Interurban electric-powered railway. \n \nWhat: Twilight Trolley: Ghosts of the C&E Interurban \nWhen: Friday\, October 24 – 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: The Rookery\, Great Blue Heron Lodge\, 10110 Cedar Road\, Munson Twp. \nThe two will be something to behold – and give you a real sense of the invention of transportation by rail. \nWhile jolly trolley conductor Sparky Wier recalls the good old trolley days\, crabby rider Rita Railbane will counter with retorts: safety measures vs. mishaps and derailments; luxury vs. long layovers; stark station conditions vs. comfortable accommodations. And while Sparky effuses about the unsurpassed efficiency of a smooth 75-minute trip from Chardon to downtown Cleveland in the days of the horse and buggy\, Rita will whine about the rough ride. Because\, as you know\, there’s one in every crowd. \nThe C&E trolley line rolled out of Cleveland and traversed Geauga County from 1900-1925.
