SUMMARY:Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run
DESCRIPTION:Challenging 5K course also for walkers; proceeds help get youth outdoors \nThink this 5K is hard? Cavemen did it in mammoth skin shorts and bare feet. \nFor the fourth year\, online\, drop-off and mail-in registration is again open for Geauga Park District’s Caveman Crawl 5K Trail Run on Sunday\, June 8\, 2014 at The West Woods in Russell Township. \nAll proceeds from this race benefit the Chip Henry Institute for Outdoor Adventure\, which funds youth programming through the parks\, including annual summer camps for grades five through 10. Previous races have drawn nearly 400 people. \nIn addition to running or walking in this different kind of race\, prehistoric garb is encouraged and commonly worn – however\, optional – with prizes awarded by three guest judges to the best costumes in (new this year) youth and adult categories. \nSo why does the caveman run this particular course? Just over 3.1 miles of hilly\, well-graded dirt and gravel\, it includes portions of Ansel’s Cave Trail\, known for its beautiful Sharon conglomerate rock outcropping – not to mention the forest views and wildlife that could always be just around the bend. \n \nRace winners\, chip-timed by Greater Cleveland XC\, will take home hand-crafted awards in the top three places overall\, as well as the top three places in nine different age groups (a 70+ age division has been added)\, in both male and female categories. \nOf course\, for cavemen\, timing didn’t actually matter – winning was beating that saber-toothed tiger on their heels! \nRace time is 9 a.m.; registration is from 7 to 8:30 a.m.; costume judging begins at 8:15 a.m.; and free food and awards will follow. \nAll ages are welcome. SUMMARY:Horseback Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:Some say there’s nothing more relaxing than traversing forested trails from a seat in the saddle atop your favorite horse. \nIf you can relate\, register to join Geauga Park District for a naturalist-led Horseback Trail Ride on Saturday\, May 24\, 2014\, at The West Woods in Russell Township. \nA 6- to 8-mile ride on the Pioneer Bridle\, Music Street and Affelder Trails promises to provide plenty of natural history lore so horse and rider may more fully enjoy future rides through these woodlands and fields. Hills\, gravel\, bridge and stream crossings should be anticipated\, as well as spring wildflowers and migratory birds. \nRide times are 10 a.m. to noon for walking only\, then 1 to 2:30 p.m. for walking\, trotting and cantering; participants may register for one or both trail rides with a lunch break between. \nHelmets are recommended and registration is required  or by calling 440-286-9516.
