SUMMARY:Blackbrook Audubon co-sponsors Chagrin River Bird Quest – Sept. 10 & 11
DESCRIPTION:White-throated Sparrow\, Photo by Debbi Schuster\nTwo local chapters of the National Audubon Society challenge everyone who enjoys birds to safely explore the Chagrin River Valley and find as many bird species as they can in the 7th annual Chagrin River Bird Quest. Bird alone or in teams and record species in one 24-hour period from 4 p.m. Friday\, September 10 to 4 p.m. Saturday\, September 11. Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland and Blackbrook Audubon Society are co-sponsoring this birding event which includes parts of Lake\, Geauga\, Cuyahoga and Portage counties. \nAll Bird Quest activities and materials are free\, but registration is required by September 10. Register at https://clevelandaudubon.org. \nTeam check-in will be 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. September 10 at The West Woods Nature Center\, 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township. Each check-in packet will have a map\, checklist\, a list of scheduled walks and t-shirts. Teams must turn in their checklists for judging by 4 p.m. Saturday. \nThis year’s Quest Celebration will be 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. September 11 at The West Woods Nature Center. Audubon will award prizes for the most species overall\, most warblers seen\, most habitats visited and most creative team name. For more information\, visit https://clevelandaudubon.org and click the Chagrin River Bird Quest logo or email birdquest@clevelandaudubon.org. \nAudubon Society of Greater Cleveland\, which covers territory along the southern half of the Chagrin River watershed\, began this contest in 2015 to bring attention to the Chagrin River Corridor IBA\, or Important Bird Area. National Audubon declared this watershed an IBA to highlight the many species who use riparian and other habitats along the Chagrin to nest each year and rest during migration. Once again\, Blackbrook Audubon Society\, which covers the northern half of the Chagrin River IBA in Lake and Geauga counties\, joins ASGC as a co-sponsor and hopes to encourage its members to share in the quest. Geauga Park District is also a sponsor. \n\n

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk
DESCRIPTION:The hugely popular solstice tradition returns to The West Woods. \nAmong the longest-running programs Geauga Park District hosts\, in its 25th year\, the Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk is the kind of charming event that fast becomes a tradition for families. \nWhat: Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk \nWhen: Sunday\, December 21 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. \nWhere: The West Woods Nature Center\, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87)\, Russell Twp. \nVisitors begin the year’s longest evening indoors with hot cider and cookies homemade by volunteers\, as well as sing-along opportunities with the accomplished Pilgrim Brass Choir\, which has contributed traditional holiday music all 23 years of the program. \nThen head outdoors in volunteer-led groups of 40 to 50 to explore the roots of our modern holiday celebrations\, derived from ancient civilizations that saw the winter solstice differently than we do. \nExpect to encounter five exciting stations to educate and entertain you about the celebration of the longest night of the year\, past and present. Cultures featured during the walk’s luminary-lit stations will include the origin of the Christmas tree; the Druids and their origins of mistletoe and holly; Native American traditions; and the Northern Barbarians and how they saw the solstice as the annual theft of the sun by the Frost Giants. \nThis program\, held at Swine Creek Reservation for 14 years and The Rookery for seven\, made its debut at The West Woods in 2010. Roughly 15 staff members and 40 volunteers make it happen annually\, and with good reason – it regularly attracts about 400 people. \nThe last group will be sent onto the path at 9 p.m. Due to limited parking\, carpooling is highly recommended; overflow parking will be at ASM International\, 9639 Kinsman Road (Route 87)\, where a shuttle will offer prompt transport to the Nature Center. \nThe Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk is free for all ages but only wheelchair/stroller accessible indoors. Registration is not required. With questions\, just call 440-286-9516. \nFor more information on the Geauga Park District\, check them out online on their website\, Facebook page\, Twitter\, and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Land of Lakes and Ledges: 1900s Tourism in Geauga
DESCRIPTION:As Cleveland’s metropolis grew with industry and population in the early 1900s\, two major developments allowed city people to seek respite from the grime and grind of city life: new labor laws that granted a five-day work week and vacation time\, as well as expanding transportation systems\, most notably the electric interurban rail network. \nGeauga\, the “Berkshires of Ohio\,” with its scenic rock ledges and tranquil natural lakes\, became a natural attraction long before the establishment of state or county park systems. \nNow you can take an imaginary 1900’s trolley trip to these special tourist destinations by following the imaginary journey of a Cleveland family\, illustrated with photographs and vintage postcards. \nWhat: Land of Lakes and Ledges: 1900s Tourism in Geauga \nWhen: Sunday\, November 30 – 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. \nWhere: The West Woods Nature Center\, 9465 Kinsman Road (Route 87)\, Russell Twp. \nOnce-upon-a-time resorts at Little Mountain\, Chester Caves\, Bass Lake and Punderson Lake will certainly be on the itinerary of your nostalgic “tour” of historic Geauga\, which will also include stops in early 20th-century Chardon\, Burton and The Great Geauga County Fair. \nRegistration is not required for this indoor program\, designed for those school age and older\, which is fully wheelchair/stroller accessible. Call 440-286-9516 with questions. \nFor more information on the Geauga Park District\, check them out online on their website\, Facebook page\, Twitter\, and YouTube.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for a fun but meaningful volunteer event for your family\, business\, church\, or civic organization\, join United Way for a Day of Caring as they bring together community members to package 50\,000 meals to stock local food pantries. \n \nUnited Way is looking for 100 volunteers on Wednesday\, October 15\, from 12:00 – 4:00 pm to assemble nutritionally balanced macaroni and cheese meals at the West Woods Geauga Park in Newbury. The raw materials will be provided by Outreach\, Inc.\, an organization that provides safe water\, food\, medical care\, and education to children and those in need at home and abroad. \n“This is going to be a great community day of volunteering\,” says Kimm Leininger\, Executive Director at United Way. “We wanted to host an event that brings community members\, businesses\, civic organizations\, churches\, and schools together to help our most needy residents. It’s a great way to supply our Geauga Hunger Task food pantries while spotlighting the fact that we do have food insecure families in Geauga\, though they may be more hidden than in other places.” \nFood insecurity is defined as not knowing where the next meal is coming from; either not being able to buy food\, or not having access to food. The Geauga Hunger Task Force served 4\,256 families in 2013\, up from 1\,030 in 2003. The biggest increase has been seen in the senior population. The Geauga Hunger Task Force relies on donations from residents\, but this event will provide a great staple that can be used when pantry shelves run low.
