If you are a gardener in Northeast Ohio, have you ever wondered what flowers are especially good for this climate and yet as carefree as possible? We do love to garden, but sometimes it gets so overwhelming! We want beauty for sure, but we also want low maintenance!

I asked Mary Slingluff, owner of Avalon Gardens this question. These are her picks to give us both beauty and carefree flower enjoyment.

1. Echinacea Purpurea

Echinacea-Purpurea

Purple cone flower. It is beautiful and it will thrive in our soils. It grows in many soil conditions and will grow in both sun and bright shade. The best part is the fall when the birds come to eat the huge cone shaped seed heads.

2. Asclepia

Milk weeds. We need monarchs – they need milkweed. The swamp milkweed is beautiful and very hardy. Gorgeous pink flower.

3. Baptisia Australis

False indigo. Tough as nails, this great indigo blue flower also has a seed pod which is great for drying. Its foliage is beautiful and we use it a lot in our flower arrangements. Supports early butterflies and is a great nectar source for bees.

4. Asters

Asters

There are tall and short varieties and they come in the most beautiful colors of pinks and purples. They really color up the fall border. Bee and butterfly favorite.

5. Coreopsis

Coreopsis-Ruby-Frost

Coreopsis

These bloom from June to frost and are available in many foliage types and flower colors. Absolute workhorse for the garden!

All these are natives, thrive in our soils, require less watering and survive our extreme weather.
