Munson Honors Veterans Day

Though in light of COVID safety protocols this year, Munson Elementary could not carry on its tradition of hosting local veteran visits in the building, the school’s staff, students and families did not miss the opportunity to honor Veterans Day in the ways they could. In lieu of visits, a number of students brought in photos of the special veterans in their lives and shared the veterans’ stories with their classmates and teachers.

Munson Hilltoppers also continued their annual tradition of participating in the DeJohn Funeral Homes Stockings for Soldiers drive, a public service event spearheaded each year by DeJohn. With stockings provided by and later collected by DeJohn, community members fill the stockings for distribution to United States military troops overseas, their families, and local veterans. Approximately 90 Munson Elementary staff members and families filled stockings, and students in teacher Patty Kingzett’s Virtual Kindergarten class wrote letters to include with the school’s stockings collection.

Staff member Molly Thomas, a kitchen assistant at Munson Elementary, introduced students to the book “America’s White Table” by Margot Theis Raven. The book tells the story of the symbolic table set in United States military mess halls, honoring troops who have fallen, are missing or held captive in the line of duty. Munson students had the opportunity to watch a short video of the book after which Ms. Thomas explained the significance of each item on the table through a live visual she created for the school.

Students Acquire Taste for Election Day

Two American favorites – cookies and pizza – were the big Election Day issues in Tiny Toppers Preschool classrooms this November. Using partitions and draped fabric, teachers created student-sized polling booths for Tiny Toppers to enter one at a time to cast their cookie and pizza votes on paper.

Tiny Toppers voted on their preference for either chocolate chip or Oreo cookies and also their preference for cheese or pepperoni pizza, with each voter receiving an ‘I voted!’ sticker upon exiting the polling area.

After the votes were counted, chocolate chip cookies and cheese pizza were revealed to be the 2020 winners.

Walter Ward, a Tiny Toppers Preschool student in teacher Beth Bumpus’ class, casts his pizza and cookie votes during the school’s Election Day event on Nov. 3.
