The Chardon Schools Foundation has awarded over $7,000 in recent grants to benefit district educational programs and teachers serving students ranging from elementary through high school.
Established in 1989, the Chardon Schools Foundation (CSF) believes that excellent schools are essential to the economic and social welfare of the community it serves. CSF financially supports educational projects and initiatives that will add excitement and imagination to the learning process.
David Jevnikar, CSF President, states, “The Chardon Schools Foundation is funded solely by contributions from local individuals and businesses. By providing funds to teachers and staff with innovative ideas, CSF hopes to ensure the highest quality education for students in the Chardon Schools.” CSF provides funds twice a year through its grant review process. Exciting projects receiving recent funding include:
- Connecting the Common Core with Technology: CSF awarded $3300 in funding to the Middle School Special Education Department for five iPads and outer box covers for students in the multi-handicapped/cross categorical classroom as requested by April Siegel-Green.
- Recorder Karate: CSF awarded $850 in funding to benefit the entire elementary school music program for a fun recorder education curriculum that was in need of a fresh approach. This grant was requested by music teachers Samantha Brady and Sharon Monarchino.
- Chardon Family Science Day: CSF will serve as a $1400 presenting sponsor of this fun-filled day of hands-on science activities for students in grades K-8. Activities will focus on many different science topics which are part of the science curriculum and use many everyday materials. This grant was requested by Jackie Brown, chair of the Chardon Family Science Day Committee and elementary school teacher.
- Mrs. Bart’s Bistro: CSF awarded $1095 in funding for weekly cooking lessons benefiting students in grades K-2 in the special education resource room at Maple Elementary School. Students learning in this environment present a varying degree of disabilities, including Autism and Down Syndrome. This grant, requested by Wendy Bartolovich, provides for materials, supplies and utensils as well as offsite cooking experiences for students, which builds experiences using fine motor skills, math, reading and more.
- Lyrical Analysis with iPods: CSF awarded $470 in funding to Leigh Ann Ferguson, Munson Elementary School teacher, for the purchase and use of 3 iPod Nanos. These devices will be used during independent reading and writing time for learning how to analyze figurative language, a key skill expected of 5th grade students.
The Chardon Schools Foundation exists through the support of local donors. Your generous gifts keep CSF’s funding vibrant and responsive to the needs of the school district. In March 2014, the community will again enjoy the online auction which provides nearly $15,000 each year for grant awards. In July 2014, the Race for Education brings families and the community together in support their our mission. Individual contributions are accepted year-round to commemorate birthdays, achievements, holidays or memorial remembrances.
