Chardon Family Science Day – Sunday April 6, 2014

The Chardon Family Science Day is set for Sunday, April 6, 2014 in the Chardon High School Gymnasium. There is an Open House format, from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, for Chardon students to explore, create, and discover the magic of science.

Magic Cupboard Contest

Hambden School recently wrapped up its One School/One Book reading program with an exciting contest that was a take-off of the major theme of the book everyone read, “The Indian in the Cupboard.” Students were asked, “What if you had a magic cupboard and it could make something not living into something living? This evolved into the school’s “Magic Cupboard Contest”.

There were two parts to the contest. The first part was a writing assignment, where the students were asked to pick something special to put in their cupboard and tell about it. The second part was to make their cupboard, which consisted of a folded piece of large construction paper made to look like a cupboard. On the inside page they could draw, paint, use photos (or the real thing) to show what they had chosen as their special object. Creativity and neatness counted!

The contest was a huge success, with many creative entries filling the walls of Hambden School. On the day the winners were announced, students and staff were encouraged to dress as cowboys and Indians. Special thanks to Hambden staff members Jamie Porter and Rachel Diehl for adding excitement and imagination to the learning process by spearheading the contest and to the Chardon Schools Foundation for funding of project materials and prizes.

Maple Students Study the Environment

Maple students in Mrs. Donna Picone’s second grade class are learning about the environment, which is a combination of the interactions between living and non-living components. They have learned that living things can cause changes in their environment, which can be observed. These interactions can cause changes in groups of living things and the physical environment (soil, rocks, water). Conducting investigations (in nature or virtually) to document specific changes and the results of the changes must be used to demonstrate this concept (e.g., moles tunneling in a lawn, beavers or muskrats building dams, plants growing in cracks of rocks).

Maple students
Maple students, including Austin Sopchak, Karl Dietz and Austin Hardesty, designed an abiotic environment (nonliving/habitat) and are studying how their biotic (living animal) is changing their environment. The class is observing a Bess Beetle (pictured) a praying mantis egg sac, red worms, ants, and lady bugs.

Food Drive at Maple

Maple Student Council is hosting its second food drive of the school year from March 31 until April 11. All nonperishable items will be accepted and the food will go to a local food bank in Chardon. As an extra challenge, each grade level will have a specific item that we are looking for. The goal is for each grade level to have at least 50 of that specific item. It is a grade level challenge! The grade level with the most items over 50 will win an ice cream treat. Feel free to assist our Maple students by dropping off your non-perishable food items at the school. Especially needed are cans of fruit, cans of veggies, dried pasta/noodles/or rice, cans of tuna fish and boxes of macaroni and cheese.

Munson Nature Scopes Lesson

staff recently visited Munson Elementary to do the second of three binocular activities with the fifth grade students, as part of the Park District’s successful Nature Scopes program. The Nature Scopes program, which is funded by the Park District Foundation, does more than just give students a tool to access nature. The Park District staff work hand-in-hand with participating teachers to meet Ohio’s Science Education Standards for fifth grade. An annual workshop for Nature Scope schools offers teachers continuing education, park-provided lesson plans, a basic overview of binocular use and the chance to network with other science teachers and discover ways to implement natural history into their Ohio Academic Standards. Participating schools even receive a bird feeder with seed installed on school property for students to observe with their Nature Scopes binoculars.

Nature Scopes
Munson fifth graders enjoyed a visit from Geauga Park District staff, where they learned how to use their binoculars to view the night sky in preparation for their upcoming field trip to the planetarium.
