Rakes, Kids, Dogs and Leaves = Fall Fun!

Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to jump in that huge pile of leaves that Dad just raked up? I don’t know how old I was, but I clearly remember the colorful sky high heap that sat right in the middle of the yard. It towered above my three foot frame and was just begging for a playmate. How could I refuse! I stood way back by the house, sure to allow myself plenty of runway to gain enough speed. I flew across the yard (probably at one mile an hour on my short legs) and took a flying leap. But instead of that soft fluffy landing I anticipated – it was more of a jarring thud and I couldn’t breathe. Superman I was not. As I recall, my dad didn’t think it was so super either.

Raking leaves can be one of those annual events that can either be a pain or a pleasure. Since it has to be done no matter what, unless you want a bunch of slimy, heavy ones in the spring, why not make it an event instead. Get all the kids out there. Get the neighbor kids, too. And don’t forget the dog!

Make it a party! Let them rake and leap as often as they want until it’s time to bag those leaves up or send them to the curb. Make a campfire afterward, cook hotdogs, roast marshmallows, then send the happy, tired crew to bed – after a bath.

But before you schedule that neighborhood event, check out your rakes first. How are they looking?

Or – heaven forbid – who would EVER leave rakes in this condition?

If you find your supply looking a little shabby, take a drive to Middlefield and stop in at First Quality Power Place. You’ll find a nice new assortment sure to last several seasons. You’ll find other equipment as well. This is a great dad store – he’ll find lots of “toys” to bring home!

Lastly – don’t throw away those old rakes! In a day where recycling and repurposing “rakes in the votes,” you may want to turn those implements for the yard into complements for your home!
