Fall is here, and it’s time for all things pumpkin. Long before Starbucks brewed their first pumpkin spice latte – for 45 years, in fact – the folks in Huntsburg have hosted their annual Pumpkin Festival. So, if you’ve always wanted to see the great pumpkin, pack up your kids and come out to this family fun festival during the first weekend in October.
Speaking of great pumpkins, last year’s winning gourd weighed in at a whopping 1,549 pounds! Be sure and stop by to find out if last year’s prize-winning grower Jerry Rose will claim the title again year.
In addition to the variety of decorated and carved pumpkins on display, you’ll also find a multitude of local crafters and carnival-style concessions. And, it wouldn’t be a Pumpkin Festival without a little pumpkin pie, or your other favorite baked goods. Make sure to start your day at the festival to partake in the pancake breakfast.
There’s no surprise that the breakfast menu features pumpkin and buttermilk pancakes. Add in Belgian waffles, Bob Evans sausage links, orange juice and real maple syrup, and you’ve got a festive and filling family tradition.
After breakfast, enjoy the festival’s free entertainment all day long. Jungle Terry will also take the stage on Saturday afternoon, to the delight of animal lovers of all ages. The parade takes place on Sunday afternoon, and there will be plenty of local musical performers each day. Don’t worry about overwhelming your little ones – this small town festival may feature super-sized gourds, but it’s the perfect sized place to bring your pint-sized pumpkins.
Far too soon, autumn will end, and the snow will fly. So, bring your family out to enjoy the crisp fall weather while it lasts. The Huntsburg Pumpkin Festival can be found in Geauga County at the intersections of State Route 528 and US 322 on Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4. The hometown festival is not only family-friendly, it’s budget friendly, too. There is no entrance fee, and all contests, entertainment and attractions are also free.
Free parking and free shuttle service from the parking areas to the Festival grounds are available from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day, due to the generous support of local sponsors.
