District Awaits Recount from County Board of Elections
The Cardinal Local School District is awaiting on official recount results from the Geauga County Board of Elections to determine the fate of Issue 27. According to the unofficial final election results posted Tuesday night, 2,213 people voted against Issue 27 with 2,207 voting for it.
That’s a difference of six votes. “Six votes is an incredibly close margin,” says Superintendent Dr. Scott J. Hunt. “I am extremely proud of the efforts the levy committee put forward in this campaign cycle, they worked tirelessly to get the word out about the need for this new money and we’ve nearly succeeded. Our hope is that a recount and perhaps some uncounted absentee and provisional ballots will help push us over the top. Thank you to everyone who voted for our district at the polls Tuesday night, your support is what makes this district an amazing place to be.”
Issue 27 is asking voters in the Cardinal School District to support a 4.5 mill levy. The money collected will help the district maintain the daily operations of the district at their current levels. The levy’s failure would mean administrators and Board Members will have to consider cuts and massive increases on pay-to-participate fees, technological and class offering enhancements could be greatly diminished, and the district could be placed in “fiscal watch” or “fiscal emergency” by the state.
Should the final vote count show the levy has failed, the Board of Education will have no choice but to vote to put some form of this levy back on the ballot in the spring. In addition to that, the district will also have a renewal levy that is up for a vote in 2017.
