Jordak Elementary Students Participate In Solar Eclipse

Third and fourth grade classes had a chance to witness celestial history during the solar eclipse on August 21st. Those students began the year learning about the Sun, Earth and Moon. Using a yellow exercise ball as the sun, students learned about the orbits of the Earth and the moon and how they all align to create an eclipse. We wanted students to be able to use the eclipse event as an educational experience so third grade teacher Mrs. Tropf helped students who had permission to view the eclipse make pinhole projection viewers out of cereal boxes. To make the viewers, students cut square holes on opposite sides of the box, one side was covered by aluminum foil and a pinhole was poked in it. A piece of white paper was put in the bottom of the box to project on. Students then took the boxes outside during the eclipse and with their backs to the sun, they were able to see the sun, eclipse, and even the clouds in the bottom of their box. Students were amazed!
