The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that honors talented U.S. high school students. Finalists are the highest-scoring program entrants in each state and represent the top 1 percent of the state’s senior students. Students qualify for recognition in the National Merit programs with their scores on the PSAT/NMSWT.
About 15,000 of the 16,000 Semifinalists named in September 2018 have met all requirements to advance to Finalist standing in the competition. All Finalists will be considered for National Merit Scholarships offered in 2019. Of this group, about 7,500 seniors are awarded scholarships of $2,500 that can be renewed each college year.
