GEAUGA PARK DISTRICT QUARTERLY CALENDAR


Find your adventure in Geauga Park District this spring – tons of seasonal birdwatching opportunities, basket-weaving for kids, Summer Solstice Day, our first-ever Touch-a-Truck, and a guided intro to our new Agents of Discovery game at The West Woods, just to name a few!

 

Here are our offerings for April, May and June 2023. For those requiring it, program registration opened March 20 for Geauga residents, and opens March 27 at 10 a.m. for out-of-towners, at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516. This list is also published on our website and in our quarterly Park Explorer Activity Guide, mailed to every Geauga County household, and available in all county libraries.

Noted local birders Matt Valencic and Kelly Stanek present techniques for ID’ing spring warblers using color patterns, habitat, behaviors and song. For novice to intermediate birders. Special attention will be paid this year to common warbler species. Handouts will be emailed upon request. A collaboration with the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland. Registration required. Attend this monthly series to learn basic journaling techniques to record your Nature observations. This month our inspiration will be woodcocks & snipes. Partially outdoors. Buckeye Trail LONG Haul Hike! (16.6 Miles)

Headwaters Park, TMHT Parking Lot Near Rt. 608

The Buckeye Trail winds nearly 1,444 miles around Ohio. Hike some Geauga Park District parks that follow the Blue Blazes. This is a shuttle service for a self-guided 16.6-mile hike along the Buckeye Trail. For experienced hikers looking for big miles on paved and gravel trails. We’ll meet at Headwaters Park then drop you off at the starting point at Big Creek Park. From there, you will walk back to your car, estimated hike time 6-8 hours. Held rain or shine so dress accordingly and bring water and food. Registration required.

The cooler, wet weather of early spring sparks increased salamander activity. Explore the ravines, streams and forests for these creatures along with other amphibians and reptiles. Dogs and their humans, join us for a 1-mile hike along the medium-level Wildflower and Hemlock trails. Cold Nose Companions Dog Training will also meet us to share some helpful tips and tricks to practice during the hike. Bring dog towels, water, a water bowl, poop scoop and bags for dog clean-up. Only one dog per handler, who must be able to fully control dog, kept on leash at all times (8 ft. max). Dogs must be non-aggressive to people and other dogs. Registration required.

Learn the basics of woodcarving from award-winning carver Robert Stadtlander in this two-part class, May 4 and May 11, 6-8 PM both days. (A one-time fee covers both sessions.) The class will cover project layout, using knives and gouges, and detailing and finishing, while carving a small pine tree. Supplies and tools are provided, but you may bring your own if you have them. Tools also available for purchase directly from the carver if desired. Ages 18+. Registration required.

A challenging backcountry hike to see marsh marigolds, Virginia bluebells and other wildflowers carpeting the wetlands. Vernal pools are filled with tadpoles, fairy shrimp and other aquatic life. Dogs and their humans, join us for a 1.3-mile hike along the easy Cattail and Goldenrod trails. The West Woods, Affelder House

Seniors, let’s explore the Affelder stream with a naturalist and search for insects, crayfish and more! We’ll be walking in the water over obstacles like rocks and downed trees, so wear shoes that can get wet or muddy. Burton Healthcare will provide breakfast at 9 AM. In collaboration with the Department on Aging and UH Geauga Medical Center. Registration required.

Horseback Trail Ride

Join a naturalist for this trail ride to enjoy summer woodlands from a seat in the saddle, at a leisurely pace in the company of other riders. Nature Journaling: Pond and Stream Fishes

Attend this monthly series to learn basic journaling techniques to record your Nature observations. This month our inspiration will be pond and stream fishes. Partially outdoors. Taking photos is optional. Fees, which include the purchase of a new journal, pen and other supplies, are as follows: first-time participants pay $20 (Geauga residents) or $24 (out-of-county residents); those who’ve attended before, but not within the calendar year, pay $10 (Geauga residents) or $12 (out-of-county residents); those who’ve attended within the calendar year pay nothing. Ready for some fresh-air fun!? Join this exciting week of exploring through Nature study and recreational activities. We’ll bike, kayak, try archery, climb the high ropes course and more! Campers begin and end each day at Claridon Woodlands Monday and Tuesday, Headwaters Park Wednesday, Observatory Park Thursday, and Chickagami Park Friday. Schedules, waivers and other details sent later. Waiver required for each camper. Bring lunch, water and a raincoat in a backpack for each day’s activities. Holbrook Hollows

Bring your own horse for this naturalist-led trail ride from Holbrook Hollows to Cleveland Metroparks’ South Chagrin Reservation. Bring a lunch and water bottle for a mid-ride break. Expect gravel trails, bridges, boardwalk, stream crossings, river crossings, a ride along a road and bicycles. Must trailer your own horse to Holbrook Hollows. Helmets recommended. Please bring a shovel to clean up in the parking lot. Registration required.

Take a backcountry hike and enter the Chagrin River to catch and identify stonefly larvae, water pennies and other invertebrates. We’ll also find rainbow darters and stream fish, indicators of water quality as determined by ODNR’s Scenic Rivers Program.
