As Monarchs fly through Northeast Ohio this season on their tremendous journey south, take a short journey to The West Woods Nature Center to view a very special showing of Flight of the Butterflies, originally produced for IMAX theaters, which explores this unbelievable migration and the man who discovered the Monarchs’ overwintering site in Mexico in 1975!
Flight of the Butterflies will be shown Sunday, August 25th from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, where real live Monarchs will also be on display, and where you can also experience a real tagging demonstration with a naturalist.
Through breathtaking IMAX technology and immersive imagery, film audiences are transported into the tiny world of one intrepid creative – Dana (Danaus Plexippus) – and two generations of her offspring as they migrate north from Mexico through U.S. to Canada and back south again to Mexico – the longest known insect migration on Earth. Viewers will also get to know to story of the determined scientist, Dr. Fred Urquhart, who spent 40 years trying to discover the mysteries surrounding their journey across three countries.
Also hear first-hand from Geauga Park District Field Naturalist Tami Gingrich, who was one of his volunteers for many years.
“Professor Urquhart and I became great friends and pen-pals,” Tami said. “I feel honored to have experienced part of this journey with him and celebrate the discovery of the Monarch overwintering sites in Mexico in 1975!”
Flight of the Butterflies is the tale of two unlikely heroes who share a common strength.
