“The sun is strongest in the summer, and I reach toward it, though I know I cannot move. Leaves grow in abundance, and the summer breeze shakes my branches. The sun stays longer, and I grow strong.”
Above is the work of Maddy Massey, whose “Solitary” placed first in the adolescent prose category of last year’s writing contest.
Rewards for Geauga Park District’s 19th Annual Nature Writing Contest have been revamped this year, with greater exposure for winning writers!
Winning works will be published and promoted on the Park District’s Facebook page.
First-place works will be published in the Park District’s quarterly Voices of Nature newsletter, mailed to every household in Geauga County – that’s 42,000 mailboxes!
Winning works will be displayed publicly this summer in the lobby of The West Woods Nature Center.
Winners will be encouraged to read their works, or have someone else read them, during a celebratory event at the popular Nature Arts Festival on Sunday, August 3.
All entries must feature nature-oriented subjects or themes. See the contest’s full rules and application on the Bulletin Board online. Categories remain the same for both prose and poetry in the following age groups:
- Adult (age 18 and older)
- Adolescent (ages 12 to 17)
- Child (ages 11 and under)
Entries must be received no later than Monday, April 21, either dropped off at Big Creek Park or mailed to ATTN: Nature Writing Contest, Big Creek Park, 9160 Robinson Road, Chardon, OH 44024.
