On March 10, Chardon’s School Resource Officer (SRO) Mike Shaw hosted the Northeast Regional Meeting of the Ohio School Resource Officers Association.

Twenty-seven fellow SRO’s from the area, including officers from Akron, Canal Fulton, Mentor, Euclid, Burton, Avon, and Aurora, heard a presentation from Shane McCarty, a Developmental Psychology PhD student at Virginia Tech.

McCarty, who has worked with the Chardon Schools since its tragic school shooting in February 2012, spoke about the university’s new program geared to support SRO efforts, called P3 (Promoting Positive Practices). This is an extension of the Virginia Tech founded Actively Caring for People (AC4P) Program, which embodies a large-scale movement that aims to establish a more compassionate, interdependent, and empathic culture within schools, businesses, organizations, and throughout entire communities.

Chardon has a very active AC4P team. By encouraging people to actively care, individuals are inspired to perform intentional acts of kindness as part of their daily routine. The positive exchanges between people, resulting from actively-caring behaviors and its supportive recognition has a mutually reinforcing effect and leads to an actively-caring culture.
