Friday night was a special night for two of our
local school’s athletic alumni.
Chardon High School and Newbury High School both celebrated Athletic Hall of Fame night during their football games. Newbury also had a formal induction with a dinner Saturday night to celebrate. Now everyone knows how much of a big deal it is to be inducted into any hall of fame. To be recognized for something you did 62 years ago, that has got to be amazing. Dale Ernst from Chardon High School would know. He got inducted on Friday night as a graduate of class 1950.
Mr. Ernst was just one of the few alumni that got inducted into the Chardon High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday night. He was joined by Joe Spear (‘57), John Leamon (‘68), Jack Huxel (‘66), Jim Huxel (‘66), and George Limberger (‘86). The 1972 Cross Country Team was also inducted for winning the State Championship that year. I know I enjoyed watching them receive their plaques, but the best part was watching their families smile and hearing the crowd clapping and cheering for the newest members of the Hall of Fame.
Newbury High School announced their newest inductees during halftime at their football game Friday night but the main ceremony was Saturday evening. The inductees were able to celebrate with their families, friends, and members of the community with a dinner in their honor. The members will also be represented with a permanent plaque outside the gymnasium. The newest members of the Newbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame are Francis “Bub” Bejbl (football, basketball, and baseball), Dennis Day (football, wrestling, and track), Dan Hannan (track), Alex Lesser (volleyball, basketball, and track) and Harry Peets (football and basketball).
Congratulations to all of you that were inducted this weekend!
