My name is Kimya Matthews. I am a Newbury Alum and have recently purchased a home in town this summer. My husband and I have been very happy so far in our new life as Newbury residents, and our two boys have fallen in love with the open space of their new back yard.
A few weeks ago, I attended a meeting on the upcoming levy and learned that many of the organizations on campus are in need of volunteers. After speaking with parents, staff, and community members , it became very clear that a surge of man power will help the district immeasurably in terms of morale, finance, and program offerings.
To address this need, I have created the League of Volunteers. This group is designed for community members and alum to connect with groups or events at the Newbury Local School District and donate just one day each year in order to alleviate some of the pressures faced by a small public institution. By joining the group, members will gain access to a calendar of school events that require support from volunteers. They will be able to sign up for dates and times that fit their schedule alongside whomever they choose, and invite other alum who show interest in giving back. In the few short days I have asked for help, we are already up to 35 volunteers! The excitement from everyone to work with old friends or parents of friends is contagious.
If you or a family member ever attended Newbury Schools as an employee or a student, please consider donating one day of help. If you ever belonged to a small school, or lived in a close knit community and would like to preserve that environment for future generations, please consider donating one day of help. My goal is to have 100 volunteers donate just one day each year to maintain all the wonderful programming that Newbury has managed to offer its students throughout its history.
I appreciate everyone’s help. For more information please contact me, Kimya Matthews at bagheri.5@osu.edu or 440-223-8091.
