Autumn Art

Park District to host weaving, ornament workshops this fall

When the serenity of Nature isn’t inspiration enough, your Geauga Park District offers workshops to nurture your artistic side – and two such workshops are on the schedule this fall season.

On Tuesday, October 15, adults are invited to join artisan Marje Shook to learn the ancient art of weaving straw at her Wheat Weaving Workshop at Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center in Chardon Township.

Participation in her workshop, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., costs $20 for materials and instruction. The finished product will be a heart-shaped ornament traditionally given as a token of friendship and love.

Shook owns Wheat-n-Sweet in Madison. See more of her work online.

Quilted Ornament

Then, on Wednesday, November 20, those ages 18 and older are invited to join artisan Angela Giaimo to create a unique quilted fabric ornament at her Quilted Fabric Ornament Workshop at The West Woods Nature Center in Russell Township.

Participation in her workshop, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., costs $14 for materials and instruction. Giaimo stresses that these beautiful ornaments, one of which won her a blue ribbon at The Great Geauga County Fair this year, require absolutely no sewing to create – which is hard to believe looking at them. See a sample on Geauga Park District’s Facebook page.

“I have taught this craft to many people,” she said, “and it has been my experience that art of any kind will always look unique. Each student will be using different fabrics, so each ornament will look different.”

“I feel strongly about building up each student to be the best of themselves that they can be.”

Registration is required for both workshops online or by calling 440-286-9516. Both facilities are fully wheelchair/stroller accessible.
