Shell’s Dog Design – 30 years of dog grooming

“I make it a point to engage with the champions of my industry so that I, too, am a champion.” ~ Michelle Toth of Shell’s Dog Design

“Dog grooming is addictive!” says Shell Toth, owner of Shell’s Dog Design in Newbury. How addicting? How about 30 years worth of hard work, starting at 15 years old! “I was 15 years old when I became obsessed with dogs. I was working at a bakery after school and on weekends. One Saturday, as I was getting ready to leave, the owner of a grooming shop mentioned that they were out a bather again, so I volunteered to start immediately. I’ve been chasing perfection ever since.”

Ungroomed dog and groomed dogShell loves dogs. That’s pretty evident if you spend any time chatting with her. She not only loves them, she is very committed to bringing her best to the grooming shop every day. “Customer satisfaction is most important.  I want people to recognize our attention to detail and our commitment to quality,” she shares. Being just ‘good’ at what she does isn’t enough though. “When it comes to grooming, I want to lead the pack. I pride myself in continuing my education. I keep up on new products and techniques, and I am not afraid to compete. I make it a point to engage with the champions of my industry so that I, too, am a champion.” Wouldn’t you rather place your family pet in the care of someone who genuinely loves what they do and is always seeking after that standard of perfection?

What’s in it for Shell? “I love making people and pets feel good. I love knowing that I have given my time to the enrichment of both their lives.” There’s really nothing quite like that deep sense of satisfaction when you know you have served your customers well. “I have made it a point to build and maintain our reputation.” With 30 years of labor and learning under her belt (or under her clippers), you can count on that continued commitment to customer satisfaction to remain at the core of her business.

Attention do-it-yourself groomers! Some free advice from the pro!

While not every dog needs a haircut, a trip to the groomer is still beneficial. Oftentimes dewclaws and nails will grow long, puncturing your dog’s legs or pads. Always keep an eye on nail length.

Another misconception is that a foul odor will go away after a bath. Sometimes that smell is coming from either the dog’s mouth or ears. An infection, in either case, will smell badly. Add checking ears and mouth to the list when doing your pet’s maintenance.
