Barney has been busy gathering information for his Woolly Bear forecast to let everyone know what kind of winter we may have this year.
Every year, wooly bears come to visit at The Barn Treasures and their many different colors predict the winter weather months based upon, of course, tried and true folklore! “Hey, it will be fun,” crowed Barney. “Let’s look at this year’s Woolly Bears.”
December 21 marks the winter Solstice and also the first day of winter. So, Barney decided he would predict his forecast by month, based upon the first day of winter.

Dec. 21 – Jan. 31: The first Woolly Bear spotted on July 15 (very early) was all butterscotch, so it will be fairly normal and maybe even mild for this first official month of winter days.

Feb. 1 – Feb. 28: “So sorry,” says Barney. The second Woolly bear spotted on Sept. 2 was all black. This will be one of our worst months of winter for 2016. Be prepared!

Mar. 1- Mar 31: The third woolly bear spotted on Sept. 19 was a multi-colored, with black on each end with brown in the middle. This means that it will be cold the first part of the month with some warmer weather for a couple of weeks, and then back to a stormy week at the end of the month.

Apr. 1 – Apr. 30: The fourth and last woolly bear spotted on Sept. 23, was a beautiful butterscotch color.
“All in all, it’s not a bad forecast,” said Barney. “In summary, we have a good first month of winter, a hard second month of winter, a third month of mixed conditions and then, with a butterscotch woolly bear in April, before we know it…spring will arrive – and maybe even early!”
