Burton Health Care: “People Are Our Most Valuable Asset”

Back in the 70s when I was in college, I remember times when it was our church’s Sunday for a nursing home facility visit. Though I hate to admit it, these were places I did not enjoy in the least. Perhaps it was just me, but the last adjective I would ever use to describe these facilities was homey! The clock could not go fast enough for me.

Times have changed! Thanks to caring people like John & Dorothy Masternick who felt there was a need for skilled nursing services in the Burton/Geauga County area, a new image has emerged, one that has truly earned their reputation of being homey. Since 1996, when Burton Health Care Center was built, just like that big old 17 year old fireside chair, it has only become more welcoming.

The warmth of Burton Heath Care Center begins with their staff of friendly caregivers. Activities Director Michelle Gordon says, “The best part of working at Burton Health Care Center is we are like one big family. Everyone is welcoming and makes you feel very comfortable.”

The mission of Burton Health Care Center:

Windsor House Incorporated is a family owned and operated business founded on Christian principles. We are people working together to provide the best possible quality of life in short and long term care. We are dedicated to providing a caring home for supportive living, with compassion toward those who depend on us to meet their needs. We promote independence and preserve dignity. That is our purpose . . . and our promise.

Mission Possible

What does the daily application of this statement look like?

You will witness this in their interactions with the people they serve. Burton Health Care believes that people are their most valuable asset; that without residents, families, employees, and employers, their nursing homes would not exist.

By recognizing individuality and diversity and promoting teamwork, they have created a community which is a far cry from what I experienced years ago! Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant Lisa Falbo says, “The most rewarding aspect of being part of the Center’s staff is interacting with the residents and seeing a smile on their face or making them laugh. I also love to see our short term patients accomplish something that will lead to their independence.”

You will watch caring nurses in action. Nurses who are compassionate toward those who depend on them to meet their needs. They strive to provide quality service, promote independence and preserve dignity. Shawna Randolph LPN, a nurse on the short term rehab hall, says, “I love to see someone come in and improve and become well enough to return home.” Because of the excellent quality of care, some residents return for their post acute care when the need arises. And they could very well see the same staff too since many employees have been with Burton Health Care for seven or more years.

You will welcome the accountability they commit themselves to. They feel responsible to residents, their families, and co-workers and take pride in carrying out the mission of the founders in the community they serve.

You won’t have to worry when bringing your loved one here. The quality of a company is revealed by its employees’ attitudes and countenances. You’ll find lots of smiles here! Maintaining Integrity through their reputation of trustworthiness, honesty, and fairness has resulted in the creation of a place many now call home. Recent remodeling has added even more to the clean, homey atmosphere.

Fun For All

The activities calendar is packed with options for residents! A resident council meeting is held where they discuss what the residents would like to participate in. The activities calendar must include components of the six modalities of activities; physical, spiritual, educational, social, creative and recreational. The most favorite of all? BINGO! They could play it every day! Volunteers are always welcome in the activity center!

Family involvement with care and visits is encouraged. Every quarter a family event is held where all can join the fun. The residents love to share this time with their loved ones.

As a pet lover, I was thrilled to see they have pet therapy. Community Liaison Laura Washington says, “Besides music, there are two things that will bring a resident out of their shell or is a great ice-breaker, and those are animals and babies. Pet therapy is a wonderful tool. Sometimes it’s even good for the staff. It lowers the blood pressure, makes them laugh and smile. It’s also a great reminiscence starter.”

Is your pet certified in therapy? This could be a great fit.

Short Term Therapy Unit

Nursing facilities have changed over the years. An increasing percentage of the nursing care at the Center is dedicated to post-acute and short term rehabilitation. Younger people are in need of post acute care because of hip and knee replacement surgery, stroke or cardiac events. By partnering with the local hospitals, they ensure a smooth transition from the hospital to their facility and reduce the likelihood of readmission back into the hospital. Their goal is to help short term rehab patients to return home safely and resume the activities they enjoy.

Memory Impaired Patients

Though Burton Health Care is not a fully equipped memory impaired facility, many of the residents have some level of dementia. The staff has gone through training to learn techniques regarding the best way to assist residents with dementia, and they consult with their team of doctors anytime a change in condition is noticed. They have a secured building and doors are locked from the inside at all times. Personalized care plans and procedures are in place for each resident to ensure their safety.

Respite Care

Taking care of an older family member can be enormously rewarding, but it can be physically and emotionally draining as well. Sometimes caregivers need a break! Burton Health Care Center can provide caregivers with a few days or few weeks of time from their responsibilities. Respite care offers you the chance to regain some personal balance while knowing your loved one is well attended to.

Hospice Services

Burton Health Care Center is dedicated to providing loving care throughout a resident’s stay. That includes their final days. They offer hospice services and respect the privacy of the families of the terminally ill, allowing them to continuously stay with their loved one while providing them with essential amenities.
