CALL FOR ENTRIES: NATURE WRITING CONTEST – Earth Day is the deadline for Geauga Park District’s 28-year-old contest

On closer inspection of the stick, its features begin to resemble that of a human arm, specifically the many dimples and imperfections of a stick, which are very similar to an arm. While on a tree, the stick also serves a very similar purpose to that of an arm; to hold up the leaves, or the “hands” of the tree.

In last year’s Nature Writing Contest, “Three Slices of Nature” by 14-year-old Nate Broadbent of Newbury placed first in the adolescent prose category – treating readers to a deep-dive on the similarities between Nature and its human caretakers, while earning the writer $50 cash.

This year, however, the same first-place adolescent winner would receive twice that, a full $100, thanks to a new sponsorship by our friends at the Foundation for Geauga Parks!

Calling anyone who has ever been inspired by Nature: Geauga Park District is now accepting entries into its 28th Annual Nature Writing Contest – Nature-inspired poetry and prose by creative writers of any age, be they experienced writers or complete amateurs. Let Nature inspire you this month and get writing…you never know where creativity will get you!

Everything you need to know (and share with your Nature-loving friends) is included in the contest application available at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org under News & Updates. Paper copies are also available at The West Woods Nature Center, Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center or your favorite Geauga library.

Entries must be received by Earth Day, Friday, April 22, to qualify. Age categories are adult (age 18+), adolescent (ages 12-17) and child (ages 11 and under) in both poetry and prose.

Upon winning, writers earn cash prizes (significantly boosted this year by the Foundation for Geauga Parks); invitation to a special winners celebration July 19 at Claridon Woodlands; publication in our winners chapbook and www.geaugaparkdistrict.org; and naming in the Park District’s summer activity guide, reaching more than 40,000 Geauga households.
