I rush frantically for my camera, fingers stumbling out of control. I take a picture just as a crack of lightning crashes through the center of the sky, dividing it into two. The image upon the screen has orange and it has red. However, it doesn’t look anything compared to what my eyes witness at this moment.
“Lightning on the Tapestry of Brilliant Twilight” by 14-year-old Samyuktha Iyer placed first in the adolescent prose category of last year’s Nature Writing Competition – and reminds us to experience Nature in the moment, to soak it in, to revel in the connection.
Calling anyone who has ever been inspired by Nature! Geauga Park District is now accepting entries into its 26th Annual Nature Writing Contest – Nature-inspired poetry and prose by creative writers of any age.
Download your contest application at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org under News & Updates, or pick one up at The West Woods Nature Center, Big Creek Park’s Meyer Center or your favorite Geauga library. Entries must be received by Saturday, May 1, to qualify. Age categories in both poetry and prose are adult (age 18+), adolescent (ages 12-17) and child (ages 11 and under).
Winners receive cash prizes; honors during the 30th Annual Nature Arts Festival on Sunday, August 8, at Big Creek Park; publication in a winner chapbook and on www.geaugaparkdistrict.org; and naming in the Park District’s summer activity guide, reaching more than 42,000 Geauga households. Good luck!
