Car Raffle Raises Funds for Newbury Veteran’s Memorial Park

On Memorial Day, 2014, the official ground breaking for the Veteran’s Memorial Park in Newbury, OH took place. The Park will be built without using tax payer funding. A fund depository through The American Legion Post 663 has been established to accept donations.

Initial money will be raised by raffling off a new car.

The car is a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox LS FWD. The car was donated to the Veteran’s Memorial Project by the Chevy Network and Pat Preston’s Preston Motors located in Burton OH. Ticket sales officially began July 4th at the Veteran’s Appreciation Day at the Geauga County Fairgrounds. Ticket price are $25 per ticket. Drawing will be held at Preston Chevrolet on November 18. Winner need not be present. Total tickets sold will be 2000. Tickets will be sold through American Legion Post 663 in Newbury and all proceeds will be used to establish the memorial to veterans of all American wars from the Revolutionary War to present.

The memorial will be constructed on the now vacant property on the southwest corner of the intersection of State Rte. 87 (Kinsman Rd.) and Auburn Rd.

Newbury Veteran's Memorial

Phase #1 will be a pentagon-shaped gazebo with each side representing one of the service branches. The target date for completion is Veteran’s Day 2014. Subsequent phases being planned will include a wooded gravel path through the property’s existing woods, a pentagon-shaped play area, and handicapped parking area. Another pentagon-shaped focus area at the north end of the park near Rt. 87 will include a tank in the center on an angled concrete pad depicting how it would have looked rising from a trench in battle.

As part of the planned landscape features, there will be two paths divided by plantings of ornamental flowering trees from the gazebo northward to the tank. Individual yet subtle features in the park will be symbolic of the various theaters where our military heroes sacrificed so much defending the freedoms we enjoy in this great nation. Some examples are hedgerows reminiscent of the European theaters and grasses symbolizing Vietnam.

Organizations and businesses assisting with ticket sales and those underwriting needed materials or services will be recognized on a permanent plaque to be constructed on site at the completion of the project.
