Manuals are essential to understanding how something works or how something is created, and Cardinal Middle School teachers Ms. Berigan, Miss Karg, Mrs. Libby and Mr. Ruscitto are making sure their students have a handle on manuals.
In a recent career-readiness/transition activity, teachers had students create a manual for preparing no-bake cinnamon rolls and s’mores – two treats students made in a previous activity. Students worked together in groups to sequence pictures of the different steps in the treat preparation process and then pasted those pictures on to a piece of paper with written instructions underneath to essentially create the manual (or recipe) for making each treat. Prior to creating their own manuals, students discussed what manuals are and studied examples of other manuals to better understand a manual’s layout and writing style.
“Virtually all occupations use some form of manual or manuals,” says teacher Lou Ruscitto. “This activity is designed to give students experience with manuals while stressing the difference between genres of writing, and the importance of writing clearly so others can understand and perform the process at hand.”
