Over the next several months, students at Cardinal Middle School will participate in a rewarding learning experience in which they will tackle a real issue affecting real people. They will explore the field of engineering, build 21st century skills, and become more engaged citizens. Mr. Spence will offer “21st Century Intervention” to students in grades 6-8 so that students will have the opportunity to solve the issue of “Tomorrow’s Transit,” using an engineering design process.
Students will conduct research, design a virtual city using Sim City software, write a narrative of their city, build a three dimensional model of their city to scale, and prepare displays for a presentation to engineer judges. Simultaneously, students in Miss Orlando’s 8th grade ELA Honors course will be writing research essays based on their solutions to designing a new way to move people in and around their city.
Through this learning experience, students will have the opportunity to:
- participate in a transformative, project-based learning experience
- strengthen their 21st century skills; creative and critical thinking and problem solving, communication, collaboration, and citizenship.
- receive mentoring while exploring the field of engineering
- gain an understanding for the value of studying science, social studies, technology, engineering, English/ language arts, and mathematics
Qualifying schools will be invited to send three students as representatives to the Ohio Region Future City Competition, which will take place in Columbus, on Saturday, January 18, 2014. A showcase event is also being planned for participating schools in Geauga County under the direction of Deborah Morgan, Gifted Coordinator/ Academic Consultant of the Geauga County Educational Service Center, Chardon, Ohio.
