Cardinal High School held its annual spring sports banquet on Thursday, May 28 where several student athletes were recognized for their efforts on the field and in the classroom.  The awards and their recipients are outlined below.

Kaitlin B. and Ian M. have received the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s prestigious Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award.  The award, named for two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, is presented each year to a male and female student who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community.  Kaitlin B., was a standout volleyball player at Cardinal and will continue her athletic and academic career at Ashland University in the fall.  Ian M. was a standout wrestler who represented Cardinal at the State Wrestling Meet this year.  Both students displayed the characteristics for which this award was designed.

The National Federation of High School’s National Award of Excellence is presented each year to one male and one female student who have exhibited the qualities that embody good citizenship, good moral character, and good sporting behavior.  This year’s award recipients were Jessica K., basketball and softball player, and K.C. C., a football and baseball player.  Both recipients are active in the community as well as in the school.  K.C. will continue his baseball career next year at Walsh University.

The OHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Award is presented each year to the senior male and female athlete who have the highest grade point average and have earned a minimum of four varsity letters.  This year, the awards were presented to Joe T., a football and baseball player, and Cheyenne P., who ran cross country and played basketball.

The OHSAA’s State Award for Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity is presented each year to a person within the school or community who is a positive role model for others and who has contributed to the well-being of the youth of Cardinal High School.  This year, the State Award was presented to Ric Weirick.  Weirick has volunteered to help with the football team for games for many years.  He assists with equipment on the sidelines.  In addition, he and his family have prepared a brown bag lunch (dinner) for the players and coaches after road games.

Each year, Cardinal coaches vote for both the Male and Female Senior Athlete Award.  These are the most prestigious awards presented by the Cardinal Athletic Department; the list of previous winners includes some of the most distinguished athletes in the history of Cardinal High School.  The John Smallwood Award, given to the top senior male athlete, was presented to Logan S.  The Jo Harris Award, given to the top senior female athlete, was presented to Cheyenne P.
