Cardinal Students Attend The University of Akron STEM Day

Goodyear Zombie Challenge Award

Zombies beware! Award-winning zombie fighters are now protecting the halls of Cardinal Middle School! Cyndle, Emmeline, Hunter, and Lacey received the top award in Zombie Fighting at The University of Akron’s Goodyear STEM Career Day on April 18, 2015. That contest was one of many events they, and 3000 other middle school students from across Ohio, participated in during the experience.

60 CMS students from Mrs. Casavecchia’s, Mr. Sherman’s, Ms. Avalon’s, Mrs. Boles’ and Mr. McCandless’ classes attended the Career Day put on by the Goodyear Tire Corporation. Prior to warding off Zombies, students spent the day following a schedule and visiting stations representing colleges and corporations that provide education and careers in engineering.

Students explored nanotechnology, took a virtual walk across a penny, made silly putty, tested racing tires and completed engineering aptitude test questions. “We are so grateful to the Middle School PTSA for providing transportation to this worthwhile trip,” says 6th grade Science teacher Stephanie Boles. “This was a great experience for our students to see how the components of STEM exist in the real world and what potential college and career opportunities lie ahead for them once they graduate.”
