GE Lighting CEO Maryrose Sylvester ’83 returns to campus to kick off Career Week
President and Chief Executive Officer of GE Lighting Maryrose Evans Sylvester ’83 (Gates Mills) returned to NDCL on Monday, March 24, to deliver the keynote address for Career Week 2014. The Notre Dame Academy alumna leads 13,000 employees in more than 100 countries in an exciting global transformation as world markets move toward energy-efficient lighting solutions.
Sylvester identified four life lessons she learned first and foremost from her parents—lessons that were later reinforced at Notre Dame Academy.
“First, always do your best: Effort counts. Never settle for mediocrity. Input will always determine output.
“Second, get uncomfortable: Do hard things,” Sylvester stressed. “Push yourself to do things you normally would not do. That is where growth occurs.
“Third, believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in you, no one will.
“Fourth, run your own race. You can write your own story.”
Sylvester also encouraged NDCL students to become very good at one thing that will set them apart from the pack, to choose a career they enjoy and are passionate about.
Throughout the week, sophomores and juniors had the opportunity to attend up to three different sessions. Each session included a series of small group discussions with the presenters, offering students the ideal opportunity to connect face-to-face with accomplished professionals in seven distinct career clusters: Arts and Communication; Business; Computer and Information Technology; Education/Social Work; Healthcare; Legal, Government and Protective Services; and Science and Engineering.

The Clinic’s intensive, paid internships provide top students throughout northeastern Ohio with the opportunity to work and learn alongside nationally renowned healthcare professionals in a variety of fields.
At the end of the program, students present scientific research or creative projects that they produce during their internship experiences.
