Chardon Local Schools: Mailing Books to District Homes to Keep Kids Reading
COVID-19 threatens student learning. We are fighting back!

Chardon, OH – Chardon Local School has partnered with Kids Read Now and their unique Comprehensive Summer Reading Program to help close a potential achievement gap that could occur if there is a needed school or district shift to emergency remote learning (ERL) in 2020-2021 due in response to the evolving COVID-19 pandemic. Kids Read Now’s Comprehensive Reading Program delivers eight new books to Chardon Schools’ K-3 students weekly and includes exciting multicultural, bilingual, fiction and nonfiction titles loved by children in the district’s classrooms. These books are mailed directly to students’ home addresses and no in-home technology is required. Each book includes guided discussion questions to help increase family engagement. A bonus nineth book of beautifully illustrated creative writing prompts concludes the program so children can write their own stories!

“A shift to ERL would normally mean learning loss – especially among disadvantaged students who often live in book deserts and don’t have access to libraries, Wi-Fi, or other community programs and especially so during the COVID-19 restrictions.
Our program has been proven to eradicate the typical summer slide and help kids gain up to 2.5 months of learning over the summer,“ said Leib Lurie, CEO of Kids Read Now, the nonprofit company managing this program for Chardon Schools.

Dr. Kelly Moran, Chardon Schools’ Curriculum Supervisor and the district’s Maple-Kindergarten Principal stated: “Now, more than ever, we believe in the power of getting tangible books into children’s hands to foster early literacy development. It is because of the exemplar programming and family friendly design of the Kids Read Now program that we are able to take the literacy engagement between school and family to a whole new level. Thank you for supporting our vision to develop literate Hilltoppers here in Chardon!”

Kids Read Now, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with the singular mission to eliminate the summer reading slide. To learn more about Kids Read Now and the Book Bridge Program, please visit
