Earth Day Scouting! Thank You to Boy Scout Troop 91 for their Hard Work at Sunnybrook Preserve!

On Earth Day 2017, Boy Scout Troop 91 of Munson Township assisted Geauga Park District’s Natural Resource Management with some important habitat management at Sunnybrook Preserve.

About 25 scouts and scout leaders worked five hours with saws, pruners and lots of manpower, clearing about 1.5 acres of non-native, invasive European Alder (Alnus glutinosa) trees. These aggressively growing trees had been spreading through a portion of the park, pushing out native plant species.

With the alder removed, there is now room for a native shrub planting that will take place later this year, providing space for more beneficial wildlife habitat and benefiting park visitors and the general public for years to come, said Joel Firem, a Park District land steward.

“The troop exceeded my expectations of what they would accomplish,” Firem added. “It was a pleasure working with them, and we hope to collaborate on future projects.”
